8월 9일 시편 84:5-6 주께 힘을 얻고 그 마음에 시온의 대로가 있는 자는 복이 있나이다 그들이 눈물 골짜기로 지나갈 때에 그곳에 많은 샘이 있을 것이며 이른 비가 복을 채워 주나이다
언제나 무사태평하고 즐겁기만 해서는 위로가 오지 않습니다. 위로는 하나님께서 주시는 귀한 선물인데, 이 위로를 체험하려면 마음 깊은 곳까지 내려갈 생각을 해야 합니다. 그러고 나서 그분과 동역자 될 준비를 해야 하는 것입니다.
밤이 필요합니다. 이 밤의 그림자가 우리 영혼의 동산 위에 모여들 때, 그래서 나뭇잎들 수런거림을 멈추고 꽃들도 제 몸을 닫아 더 이상 햇빛에 빛나지 않을 때, 우리가 반드시 기억해야 할 것이 있습니다. 우리는 결코 부족함이 없을 것이며, 오로지 해가 진 뒤에야 하늘에서 거룩한 위로의 이슬방울이 떨어져 내린다는 사실입니다.
눈물 골짜기, 슬픔과
고통의 골짜기 지났네. 하지만
“위로의 하나님” 함께 계셔
언제나 붙들고 지켜 주셨네.
땅에 구름과 햇빛 필요하듯
우리 영혼에도 슬픔과 기쁨 있어야겠네.
그러니 자주 우리를 화로에 넣으시고
정금에 붙은 찌꺼기 털어 내시네.
그분께서 고난의 골짜기로 우리 인도하실 때
우리 그분의 전능하신 손 더듬어 찾았네.
그분께서 우리에게 보내시는 시련과 슬픔,
그분께서 가르치시는 은혜 수업의 한 과정이니.
우리 그분의 가위를 피해 자주 달아나며
정원사 되시는 이의 지혜를 망각하지만,
깊이 자르고 다듬을수록
나오는 송이마다 그 열매 굵고 크다네.
고통이 필요함을 그분께서 잘 아시니,
지혜로운 목적 마음에 두고 계심이라.
어두운 골짜기에서 속삭이시네..
"나의 하는 것을 곧 알리라.”
우리 삶의 어두운 골짜기 지날 때,
그분 사랑의 달디단 샘물 솟아나고
우리는 배우네, 우리의 슬픔과 상실
얼굴을 가리고 온 축복이었음을.
그러므로 그분 인도하시는 곳 따라가리라,
어두운 길이나 밝은 길, 어디든 따라가리라.
그분께서 위로 주심을 우리 알았음에,
밤에 부를 노래 주심을 우리 알았음에.

Comfort in the Depths
Blessed is the man whose strength is in thee... who passing through the valley of weeping, make it a well — Ps 84:5-6
Comfort does not come to the light-hearted and merry. We must go down into “depths” if we would experience this most precious of God’s gifts — comfort, and thus be prepared to be co-workers together with Him.
When night — needful night — gathers over the garden of our souls, when the leaves close up, and the flowers no longer hold any sunlight within their folded petals, there shall never be wanting, even in the thickest darkness, drops of heavenly dew — dew which falls only when the sun has gone.
“I have been through the valley of weeping,
The valley of sorrow and pain;
But the ’God of all comfort’ was with me,
At hand to uphold and sustain.
“As the earth needs the clouds and sunshine,
Our souls need both sorrow and joy;
So He places us oft in the furnace,
The dross from the gold to destroy.
“When he leads thro’ some valley of trouble
His omnipotent hand we trace;
For the trials and sorrows He sends us,
Are part of His lessons in grace.
“Oft we shrink from the purging and pruning,
Forgetting the Husbandman knows
That the deeper the cutting and paring,
The richer the cluster that grows.
“Well He knows that affliction is needed;
He has a wise purpose in view,
And in the dark valley He whispers,
’Hereafter Thou ’lt know what I do.’
“As we travel thro’ life’s shadow’d valley,
Fresh springs of His love ever rise;
And we learn that our sorrows and losses,
Are blessings just sent in disguise.“
So we’ll follow wherever He leadeth,
Let the path be dreary or bright;
For we’ve proved that our God can give comfort;
Our God can give songs in the night.”
