10월 2일 "데리시고 따로... 떠나가셨으나" (누가복음 9:10)
은혜가 자라나려면 엄청난 시간을 고독에 바쳐야 합니다. 영혼이 가장 왕성하게 성장하는 계기는 결코 다른 이들과의 접촉에 있지 않습니다. 고요히 한 시간을 기도하는 것이 다른 이들과 사귀며 여러 날을 보내는 것보다 크나큰 결과를 산출해 낼 때가 빈번합니다. 가장 맑은 이슬과 깨끗한 대기는 사막에 있습니다.
너만 따로 나와 함께 가서 잠시 쉬자.
일과 사람에 지쳤음을 내 아느니,
땀과 먼지로 얼룩진 네 이마 훔쳐 내고
내 고요한 힘으로 다시 강건해지거라.
세상이 귀하다 하는 모든 것 버려두고,
이미 세상이 알지 못하는 사귐 있으니 오라,
여기서 나와 둘이, 내 아버지와 둘이서 있자.
나와 함께, 내 아버지와 함께면 외롭지 않으리라.
네가 밖에서 한 모든 말과 일 내게 와 이르라.
승리와 실패, 희망과 두려움 모두 말하라.
사람들의 굳은 마음 어떻게 어루만져야 하는지 내 아느니,
내 승리의 면류관은 언제나 눈물에 젖어 있느니라.
이제 와서 쉬라, 갈 길은 아득히 멀고
너는 길가에 주저앉아 기진하리라.
너 먹을 생명의 양식 여기 있으니,
너 마실 사랑의 음료 여기 있으니.
그렇게 네 주님과 사귐 나누고 돌아와서
하루 해 질 때까지 힘써 일하라.
주님과 만나는 짧은 시간 결코 헛되지 않으니
너 거기서 네 주님과 하늘의 안식 더 많이 알리라.

Alone In The Desert

Your victories and failures, hopes and fears.
I know how hardly souls are wooed and won:
My choicest wreaths are always wet with tears.
“Come ye and rest; the journey is too great,
And ye will faint beside the way and sink;
The bread of life is here for you to eat,
And here for you the wine of love to drink.
“Then fresh from converse with your Lord return,
And work till, daylight softens into even:
The brief hours are not lost in which ye learn
More of your Master and His rest in Heaven.”
