10월 4일 "여호와께서 욥의 말년에 욥에게 처음보다 더 복을 주시니" (욥기 42:12)
욥은 슬픔을 겪고 유산을 찾았습니다. 그의 시련은 그의 신실함을 확증하고 인정하기 위함이었습니다. 마찬가지로, 하나님께서 나 역시 고난을 통해 나의 성품을 깊게 하고 고난이 없이는 받을 수 없는 선물들을 내게 주시려 함입니다. 시련을 통해서야 내 열매가 가장 잘 익으니 왜 아니겠습니까. 나는 겸손과 눈물과 죽음을 겪어서야 영광의 자리로 나옵니다. 정확히 욥의 경우가 이러했는데, 그는 고통을 통해서 하나님을 더 깊이 알고 스스로에 대해서는 더욱더 겸손해졌습니다. 마침내 그는 이처럼 외쳤습니다. "내가...... 이제는 눈으로 주를 뵈옵나이다"(5절).
내가 만일 내 고통과 상실을 통해 장엄히 오시는 하나님의 임재를 경험하고, 그 앞에 엎드려 "뜻이 하늘에서 이룬 것같이 땅에서도 이루어지이다"(마 6:10)라고 기도한다면, 나는 잃은 것이 아니라 진실로 크게 얻은 것입니다. 하나님께서는 욥에게 그가 누릴 미래의 영광을 얼핏 보게 하셨는데, 아닌 게 아니라 그 고난의 세월을 겪는 동안 그는 하나님의 장막 너머를 통찰하고 진심으로 말할 수 있게 되었습니다. "내가 알기에는 나의 구속자가 살아 계시니"(욥 19:25). 그러므로 진정 "여호와께서 욥의 말년에 욥에게 처음보다 더 복을 주"셨습니다.
손에 금덩어리 하나 챙겨들지 않고 찾아오는 고난은 없습니다.
우리가 끝까지 섬기며 인내로써 기다리기만 하면 불행처럼 보이는 역경은 결국 옳은 일을 하는 우리에게 유익이 될 것입니다. 과거의 저 위대한 승리의 영혼들을 생각해 보십시오. 그들은 굽힘 없는 믿음과 용기를 가지고 일했습니다. 고난을 받아들여 견디지 않고서는 결코 얻어 낼 수 없는 축복들이 많습니다. 어떤 기쁨은 반드시 슬픔을 거쳐야만 우리에게 올 수 있습니다. 세상의 휘황한 빛이 모두 사라졌을 때만 우리가 받을 하나님의 거룩한 진리의 계시가 있습니다. 그리고 쟁기질이 끝난 다음에야 자라서 우리에게 오는 수확물이 있습니다.
우리가 아는 가장 강한 영혼들은 고난에서 나왔습니다. 인간의 위대한 성품은 슬픔의 상처가 확연한 사람들에게서 드러납니다. 시대를 이어 온 순교자들은 불처럼 찬란한 대관식의 예복을 입었지만, 그들은 눈물과 슬픔으로 하늘문을 본 사람들이었습니다.
그 반짝이는 빛으로
네가 두른 황금 사슬 알아보리라,
네 가슴의 고요한 사랑의 힘으로
너 견뎌야 했던 불 알아보리라,
참된 가슴아, 영원히 뛰어라,
튼튼한 황금 사슬아, 밝히 빛나라,

Through the Fire
So the Lord blessed the latter end of Job more than his beginning — Job 42:12
Through his griefs Job came to his heritage. He was tried that his godliness might be confirmed. Are not my troubles intended to deepen my character and to robe me in graces I had little of before? I come to my glory through eclipses, tears, death. My ripest fruit grows against the roughest wall. Job’s afflictions left him with higher conceptions of God and lowlier thoughts of himself. “Now,” he cried, “mine eye seeth thee.”
And if, through pain and loss, I feel God so near in His majesty that I bend low before Him and pray, “Thy will be done,” I gain very much. God gave Job glimpses of the future glory. In those wearisome days and nights, he penetrated within the veil, and could say, “I know that my Redeemer liveth.” Surely the latter end of Job was more blessed than the beginning. — In the Hour of Silence

Apparent adversity will finally turn out to be the advantage of the right if we are only willing to keep on working and to wait patiently. How steadfastly the great victor souls have kept at their work, dauntless and unafraid! There are blessings which we cannot obtain if we cannot accept and endure suffering. There are joys that can come to us only through sorrow. There are revealings of Divine truth which we can get only when earth’s lights have gone out.
