열왕기상 17:7 "땅에 비가 내리지 아니하므로 얼마 후에 그 시내가 마르니라"
상실에 처하게 하신 하나님의 섭리가 있습니다. 우리 앞에 찾아온 실패와 소멸의 역할이 있습니다. 그분께서는 우리에게 부족과 비움을 선물로 주십니다. 아직도 이러한 사실들을 모른다면 우리 믿음의 교육이 불완전한 것입니다. 사실, 우리 삶이 영적인 기반에 서는 계기는 물질적 불안정성입니다.
엘리야가 생각에 잠겨 앉아 있던 시냇가, 점점 줄어드는 그릿 시냇가는 우리 각 사람의 삶을 여실히 드러냅니다. "얼마 후에 그 시내가 마르니라.” 이것이 우리 과거의 역사이며 우리 미래의 예언입니다.
선물을 믿는 것과 선물 주시는 이를 믿는 것은 다릅니다. 우리는 이 차이를 알아야 합니다. 선물은 한철이나 갈까 모르겠지만, 선물 주시는 이는 한 분밖에 없는 영원한 사랑이십니다.
그릿 시냇가는 엘리야의 난제였으니, 그가 사르밧에 도착할 때까지 그러했습니다. 그런데 한순간에 모든 것이 햇빛처럼 명백해졌습니다. 하나님께서는 엄한 지시 한 번으로 모든 것을 끝내시는 분이 아닙니다. 그러니 우리 인생의 고뇌와 소모와 눈물은 막간극일 뿐 결코 마지막 장면이 될 수 없습니다
주께서 엘리야를 곧장 사르밧으로 데려가셨다면, 그릿 시냇가의 믿음의 삶이라는 것은 그에게 없었을 테고, 따라서 그는 더 지혜로운 예언자요 더 훌륭한 인간으로 성장할 기회를 얻지 못했을 것입니다. 그러므로 우리의 이 세상 시내와 여타의 외부적 자원이 마르고 줄어들 때는 언제나, 우리의 희망과 도움은 하나님께 있음을 배우게 하려고 허락하신 것임을 알아야 합니다. 그분께서 하늘과 땅을 만드셨으니 말입니다.
그대 역시 아름다운 물가에 앉아
지친 영혼의 목마름 가라앉혔으리라.
그리고 세월 지나 그대의 시냇가
더 이상 그 옛날의 시냇가 아니었으리라.
용기와 위로와 축복과 힘을 주던 가슴,
무엇도 바라지 않고 아낌없이 주던 사랑,
기쁨, 보배 같은 기쁨, 세월 가고 또 가니
모두 무디고 흐리어졌으리라.
그러므로 영혼아, 그대가 사랑했던 시냇가
이제 그대를 저버리고, 더 이상 갈증도 풀지 못한다면,
한때 활력이며 기쁨이었던 시냇물 사라졌다면,
그분으로 그대 가슴 채우라.
그분 그대 저버리고 실망시키지 않으리라.
그분의 위로와 보호 세월 가도 변치 않으리라.
그분 분명히 기쁨의 향유 그대에게
바르시고, 그대 눈물 닦아 주시리라.

Providence of Loss
It came to pass... that the brook dried up — 1 Kgs 17:7
The education of our faith is incomplete if we have not learned that there is a providence of loss, a ministry of failing and of fading things, a gift of emptiness. The material insecurities of life make for its spiritual establishment. The dwindling stream by which Elijah sat and mused is a true picture of the life of each of us. “It came to pass … that the brook dried up”— that is the history of our yesterday, and a prophecy of our morrows.
In some way or other we will have to learn the difference between trusting in the gift and trusting in the Giver. The gift may be good for a while, but the Giver is the Eternal Love.
Cherith was a difficult problem to Elijah until he got to Zarephath, and then it was all as clear as daylight. God’s hard words are never His last words. The woe and the waste and the tears of life belong to the interlude and not to the finale.
Had Elijah been led straight to Zarephath he would have missed something that helped to make him a wiser prophet and a better man. He lived by faith at Cherith. And whensoever in your life and mine some spring of earthly and outward resource has dried up, it has been that we might learn that our hope and help are in God who made Heaven and earth. — F. B.
