11월 15일 고린도후서 1:8 형제들아 우리가 아시아에서 당한 환난을 너희가 모르기를 원하지 아니하노니 힘에 겹도록 심한 고난을 당하여 살 소망까지 끊어지고
고린도후서 12:9 나에게 이르시기를 내 은혜가 네게 족하도다 이는 내 능력이 약한 데서 온전하여짐이라 하신지라 그러므로 도리어 크게 기뻐함으로 나의 여러 약한 것들에 대하여 자랑하리니 이는 그리스도의 능력이 내게 머물게 하려 함이라
브니엘에서 야곱의 인생이 위기에 처했습니다. 하나님께서는 야곱이 그분께 진정으로 호소할 때까지 그 위기를 해소해 주지 않으셨습니다. 그날 밤 야곱은 하나님과 씨름하고, 이전과는 전혀 다르게, 문자 그대로 하나님을 절박하게 붙드는 자리에 이르게 되었습니다. 또한 위험과 대면함으로써 야곱의 믿음과 하나님을 아는 지식이 확대되었고, 승리하는 새 삶의 능력이 탄생했습니다.
주께서는 다윗으로 하여금 기나긴 고통의 세월을 거치며 자기 하나님의 능력과 신실하심을 어렵사리 배우게 하셨습니다. 그 고난의 세월을 통해서 그는 또한 믿음과 경건에 이르는 지식을 키웠고, 이 믿음과 경건은 이스라엘 왕이라는 영광스러운 삶의 불가결한 원칙이 되었습니다.
바울은 한시도 벗어날 날 없던 곤고한 환경을 통해서, 그러므로 그를 통해서 교회 역시, 하나님의 위대한 약속의 깊은 뜻을 배우고 마침내는 고백하게 되었습니다. "내 은혜가 네게 족하도다” (고후 12:9). 그리고 우리 역시 크나큰 시련과 위험이 없었다면 지금처럼 그분을 알고 신뢰하는 일은 불가능했을 테고 위급할 때 꼭 필요한 그분의 크신 은혜를 우리 것으로 삼지도 못했을 것입니다
고난과 어려움은 우리 믿음에 던지는 하나님의 도전입니다. 섬김의 길을 가로막는 장애물을 만나면 믿음을 위한 그릇으로 알고, 그 그릇을 예수의 충만하심과 족하심으로 채워야 합니다. 그분을 의지하며 믿음으로 나아갈 때 시련이 옵니다. 어떤 때는 기다리며 인내를 온전히 이루어야 합니다(약 1:4). 하지만 결국 우리는 돌이 굴려 옮겨진 (눅 24:2) 모습을, 시련의 시간을 견딘 우리를 갑절로 축복하시고자 기다리고 계시는 예수님의 모습을 보게 될 것입니다.

God allowed the crisis to close around Jacob on the night when he bowed at Peniel in supplication, to bring him to the place where he could take hold of God as he never would have done; and from that narrow pass of peril, Jacob became enlarged in his faith and knowledge of God, and in the power of a new and victorious life.
God had to compel David, by a long and painful discipline of years, to learn the almighty power and faithfulness of his God, and grow up into the established principles of faith and godliness, which were indispensable for his glorious career as the king of Israel.
Nothing but the extremities in which Paul was constantly placed could ever have taught him, and taught the Church through him, the full meaning of the great promise he so learned to claim, “My grace is sufficient for thee.”
And nothing but our trials and perils would ever have led some of us to know Him as we do, to trust Him as we have, and to draw from Him the measures of grace which our very extremities made indispensable.
Difficulties and obstacles are God’s challenges to faith. When hindrances confront us in the path of duty, we are to recognize them as vessels for faith to fill with the fullness and all-sufficiency of Jesus; and as we go forward, simply and fully trusting Him, we may be tested, we may have to wait and let patience have her perfect work; but we shall surely find at last the stone rolled away, and the Lord waiting to render unto us double for our time of testing. — A.
