"Get thee up into the high mountain" (Isaiah 40: 9).

Our knowledge of Christ is somewhat like climbing a mountain.  When you are at the base you see very little.  The mountain itself appears to be half as high as it really is.  Confined in a little valley, you discover scarcely anything but the rippling brooks as they descend into the stream at the foot of the mountain.  Climb the first rising knoll, and the valley lengthens and widens beneath your feet.  Go higher, and you see the country for four or five miles round and are delighted with the widening prospect.  Mount still, and the scene enlarges; until at last, you are on the summit.  The Christian life is of the same order.  When we first believe in Christ, we see little of Him.  The higher we climb, the more we discover of His beauties.  But who has ever gained the summit?  Who has known all the heights and depths of the love of Christ which passes knowledge?  Paul, when grown old, sitting gray-haired, shivering in a dungeon in Rome, could say with greater emphasis than we can, "I know whom I have believed."  Each experience had been like the climbing of a hill, each trial had been like ascending another summit, and his death seemed like gaining the top of the mountain.  From there he could see the faithfulness and the love of Him to whom he had committed his soul.  Get up, dear friend, to the high mountain.

제목 : 높은 산에 오르라

"너는 높은 산에 오르라" (사 40: 9).

우리가 그리스도를 아는 것은 다소 산을 오르는 것과 같습니다.  기슭에서는 보이는 것이 거의 없습니다.  산 자체도 실제의 반높이로밖에 안보입니다.  작은 골짜기에 갇혀있으면 그대가 발견하게 되는 것은 산기슭의 개울로 찰랑찰랑 흘러내려가는 시냇물밖에는 거의 없습니다.  첫 번째 오르막 언덕을 오르면 그대의 발 밑에서 골짜기는 길어지고 넓어집니다.  더 높이 올라가면 그대는 4-5 마일 반경 안의 시골을 보게 되고 넓어지는 전망에 즐거워집니다.  계속 산을 올라가면 드디어 정상에 오를 때까지 경관은 더 커집니다.  기독교인의 삶도 같은 순서로 되어 있습니다.  우리가 처음 그리스도를 믿을 때 우리는 그분을 거의 보지 못합니다.  더 높이 올라갈수록 우리는 그의 아름다움을 더 많이 발견합니다.  그러나 지금껏 누가 정상에 도달했습니까?  누가 지식을 초월하는 그리스도의 사랑의 모든 높이와 깊이를 알았습니까?  바울이 늙어서 로마의 지하감옥에서 머리가 허옇게 되어 떨면서 앉아있을 때 그는 우리가 가능한 것보다 더 크게 강조하면서 "나는 내가 믿은 분을 안다"고 말할 수 있었습니다.  각각의 경험은 언덕을 오르는 것과 같았고 각각의 시련은 또다른 정상을 오르는 것과 같았으며 그의 죽음은 산꼭대기에 도달하는 것처럼 보였습니다.  그곳으로부터 그는 그의 영혼을 바쳤던 예수님의 사랑과 미쁘심을 볼 수 있었습니다.  사랑하는 친구여, 일어나 높은 산으로 가십시오.
