"They weave the spider's web" (Isaiah 59: 5).

See the spider's web and behold in it a most suggestive picture of the hypocrite's religion.  It is meant to catch his prey.  Foolish persons are easily entrapped by the loud professions of pretenders, and even the more judicious cannot always escape.  Custom, reputation, praise, advancement, and other flies are the small game which hypocrites take in their nets.  A spider's web is a marvel of skill.  Look at it and admire the cunning hunter's wiles.  Is not a deceiver's religion equally amazing?  How does he make so barefaced a lie appear to be truth?  A spider's web comes from the creature's own bowels.  The bee gathers her wax from flowers.  The spider sucks no flowers, yet she spins out her material to any length.  Even so hypocrites find their trust and hope within themselves.  They lay their own foundation and hew out the pillars of their own house, refusing to be debtors to the sovereign grace of God.  But a spider's web is very frail.  It is not enduringly manufactured.  It is no match for the servant's broom or the traveler's staff.  Hypocritical cobwebs will soon come down when the broom of destruction begins its purifying work.  This reminds us of one more thought--that such cobwebs are not to be endured in the Lord's house.  He will see to it that they and those who spin them will be destroyed forever.  Oh, my soul, be resting on something better than spider's web.  Let the Lord Jesus be your eternal hiding place.

"거미줄을 짜나니" (사 59: 5). 

거미줄을 보며 그 안에서 위선자의 종교를 가장 잘 암시해주는 광경을 보십시오.  거미줄은 거미의 먹이를 잡기 위한 것입니다.  어리석은 사람들은 믿음을 가장하는 사람들(pretenders)의 요란한 공언(公言)에 쉽게 사로잡히며 더 신중한 사람들조차도 언제나 피해 나갈 수는 없습니다.  애고(愛顧, custom)와 명성과 칭찬과 진급과 다른 파리들은 위선자들이 그들의 그물에서 취하는 작은 사냥감입니다.  거미줄은 기술의 경이(驚異)입니다.  거미줄을 보며 그 빈틈없는 사냥꾼의 계략에 감탄하십시오.  거짓 신자의 종교도 그와 똑같이 경이롭지 않습니까?  어떻게 그는 그토록 뻔뻔스러운 거짓말을 진실처럼 보이게 합니까?  거미줄은 거미 자신의 내장에서 나옵니다.  벌은 그의 꿀을 꽃으로부터 모읍니다.  거미는 꽃을 빨지 않지만 자신의 원료를 어떤 길이로라도 자아냅니다.  바로 이렇게 위선자들은 그들의 믿음과 소망을 자기 자신 안에서 찾습니다.  그들은 자기 자신의 기초를 놓고 자기 자신의 집의 기둥을 깎아 만들면서 하나님의 지상(至上)의 은혜에 빚진 자가  되기를 거부합니다.  그러나 거미줄은 매우 연약합니다.  거미줄은 내구성있게 제작되지 않았습니다.  그것은 하인의 빗자루나 나그네의 지팡이에 맞수가 되지 못합니다.  구제(驅除)의 빗자루가 정화(淨化)의 작업을 시작할 때 위선의 거미줄은 곧 무너질 것입니다.  이것은 우리에게 또 한가지 생각을 떠오르게 합니다--그런 거미줄은 주님의 집에서 허용되지 않을 것입니다.  하나님은 반드시 거미줄과 거미줄을 자아내는 자들이 영원히 박멸되도록 하실 것입니다.  오, 내 영혼이여, 거미줄보다 더 나은 것에 의지하라.  주 예수님이 네 영원한 은신처가 되게 하라.
