1In the days when the judges ruled, there was a famine in the land, and a man from Bethlehem in Judah, together with his wife and two sons, went to live for a while in the country of Moab. 2The man's name was Elimelech, his wife's name Naomi, and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Kilion. They were Ephrathites from Bethlehem, Judah. And they went to Moab and lived there. 3Now Elimelech, Naomi's husband, died, and she was left with her two sons. 4They married Moabite women, one named Orpah and the other Ruth. After they had lived there about ten years, 5both Mahlon and Kilion also died, and Naomi was left without her two sons and her husband. 6When she heard in Moab that the LORD had come to the aid of his people by providing food for them, Naomi and her daughters-in-law prepared to return home from there. 7With her two daughters-in-law she left the place where she had been living and set out on the road that would take them back to the land of Judah. 8Then Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, "Go back, each of you, to your mother's home. May the LORD show kindness to you, as you have shown to your dead and to me. 9May the LORD grant that each of you will find rest in the home of another husband.' Then she kissed them and they wept aloud 10and said to her, 'We will go back with you to your people.' 11But Naomi said, 'Return home, my daughters. Why would you come with me? Am I going to have any more sons, who could become your husbands? 12Return home, my daughters; I am too old to have another husband. Even if I thought there was still hope for me-even if I had a husband tonight and then gave birth to sons- 13would you wait until they grew up? Would you remain unmarried for them? No, my daughters. It is more bitter for me than for you, because the LORD's hand has gone out against me!" 14At this they wept again. Then Orpah kissed her mother-in-law good-by, but Ruth clung to her. 15'Look,' said Naomi, 'your sister-in-law is going back to her people and her gods. Go back with her.' 16But Ruth replied, "Don't urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. 17Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the LORD deal with me, be it ever so severely, if anything but death separates you and me.' 18When Naomi realized that Ruth was determined to go with her, she stopped urging her. 19So the two women went on until they came to Bethlehem. When they arrived in Bethlehem, the whole town was stirred because of them, and the women exclaimed, 'Can this be Naomi?' 20"Don't call me Naomi," she told them. Call me Mara, because the Almighty has made my life very bitter. 21I went away full, but the LORD has brought me back empty. Why call me Naomi? The LORD has afflicted me; the Almighty has brought misfortune upon me. 22So Naomi returned from Moab accompanied by Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter-in-law, arriving in Bethlehem as the barley harvest was beginning. 1사사들이 이스라엘을 다스리던 시대에 가뭄이 든 일이 있었습니다. 그 때에 엘리멜렉이라는 사람이 아내와 두 아들을 데리고 유다 땅 베들레헴을 떠나 모압 지방으로 갔습니다. 2그의 아내의 이름은 나오미고, 두 아들의 이름은 말론과 기룐이었습니다. 이들은 원래 유다 땅 베들레헴에서 가까운 에브랏 지방 사람이었지만, 모압으로 가서 살았습니다. 3그 뒤에 나오미의 남편 엘리멜렉이 죽고, 나오미와 그의 두 아들만 남게 되었습니다. 4그 두 아들은 모압 여자를 아내로 맞아들였는데, 한 여자의 이름은 오르바이고, 다른 여자의 이름은 룻이었습니다. 나오미와 그의 아들들은 모압에서 십 년쯤 살았습니다. 5그러다 말론과 기룐마저 죽어 버리자, 나오미는 남편과 두 아들을 잃고 홀로 남게 되었습니다. 6그러던 어느 날, 나오미는 여호와께서 자기 백성을 돌보아 유다에 풍년이 들게 하셨다는 소식을 들었습니다. 그래서 모압을 떠나 고향으로 돌아갈 준비를 했습니다. 나오미의 두 며느리도 함께 떠날 준비를 했습니다. 7그들은 살던 곳을 떠나 유다 땅으로 가려고 길을 나섰습니다. 8나오미가 두 며느리에게 말했습니다. "너희는 각자 너희 어머니의 집으로 돌아가거라. 너희가 나와 죽은 내 아들을 잘 보살펴 주었으니, 여호와께서 너희를 잘 돌보아 주시기를 바란다. 9또 여호와께서 너희에게 새 남편과 새 가정을 주시기를 바란다." 이 말을 한 뒤, 나오미가 작별을 하기 위해 며느리들에게 입을 맞추자, 두 며느리는 큰 소리로 울었습니다. 10며느리들이 나오미에게 말했습니다. "아닙니다. 우리도 어머니와 함께 어머니의 나라로 가겠습니다." 11그러자 나오미가 말했습니다. "내 딸들아, 너희 집으로 돌아가거라. 왜 나를 따라가려고 하느냐? 내가 아들을 더 낳아 너희에게 새 남편을 줄 수 있는 것도 아니지 않느냐? 12너희 집으로 돌아가거라. 나는 다른 남편을 맞아들이기에는 너무 늙었다. 설령 내가 오늘 밤에 다른 남편을 맞아들여서 아들을 낳을 수 있다 해도 무슨 소용이 있겠느냐? 13그 아이들이 클 때까지 너희가 기다릴 수 있겠느냐? 그렇게 오랜 세월을 남편 없이 지낼 수 있겠느냐? 그러지 마라. 여호와께서 나를 치셨기 때문에 내 마음이 너희로 인해 너무 아프구나." 14그들은 다시 한 번 큰 소리로 울었습니다. 그리고 오르바는 나오미에게 입을 맞추어 작별 인사를 했습니다. 그러나 룻은 시어머니에게 매달렸습니다. 15나오미가 말했습니다.
