죄악으로 인한 몸부림을 치자. ‘기독도’는 혼자 ‘절망소’ 가운데 남아 있어서 자기 집을 향하지 않고 좁은 문 편으로 있는 언덕을 향하여 애를 쓰되 그 등에 있는 짐으로 해서 뛰쳐날 수가 없었다. 그러던 참에 마침 ‘은조’(恩助)라 하는 사람이 와서 “무엇을 하고 있느냐”고 물었다. 기독도- 네 ‘전도’라 하는 이가 나더러 이 길로 가라 하며 저기 저 좁은 문에 이르면 장래에 노하심을 피할 수 있으리라 하므로 내가 그리로 가다가 여기 빠졌습니다. 은 조- 왜 당신은 그 징검다리를 보지 못 하였소? 기독도- 너무 무서움에 휘둘려서 딴 길로 피하려 하다가 그만 빠졌습니다. 다른 길로 가면 빠져죽습니다. 은 조- 손을 내밀으시오 그래서 ‘기독도’가 저의 손을 내미니까 ‘은조’가 저를 끌어내어 땅 위에 세우고 다시 잘 가라고 하였다 (은조가 육적 행실을 깨닫게 해주는 과정) (시 40:2)"나를 기가 막힐 웅덩이와 수렁에서 끌어올리시고 내 발을 반석 위에 두사 내 걸음을 견고케 하셨도다 " 이에 나는(꿈을 꾸는-책 저작자) ‘기독도’를 끌어 낸 사람에게 가서 말하기를 “여보시오 이곳이 ‘장망성’에서 저 좁은 문으로 가는 길이라면 왜 이곳을 고쳐서 불쌍한 행인들이 일층 안전히 지나가게 아니합니까?”하니 저가 말하기를 “이 진흙수렁은 고칠 수 없는 곳이외다. 왜 그러냐 하면 이 곳은 사람이 죄를 자복할 때에 따라오는 거품 찌끼와 더러운 것이 항상 흘러내리는 수렁이어서 ‘절망소’라 말하게 된 것이외다. 다시 말하면 죄인들이 자기의 멸망 상태를 깨달을 때에 마음 속에서 일어나는 여러 가지 두려움과 의심과 낙망, 이런 것들이 함께 모여서 이 곳에 정체되었으니 이 땅이 악하게 된 이유가 여기 있습니다. (기독도의 마음상태) 이 곳을 이렇게 악한대로 버려 둠은 결코 주의 뜻이 아니니 그의 사역자들도 주의 감역관이 지시하는 대로 근 2천년 동안이나 이 지경을 위하여 혹시라도 고칠 수 있을까 하고 수고하여 일하여 왔습니다. 그리고 내 생각에는 이 곳을 개량할까 하여 왕의 영토 각처에서 4시 물론하고 이 곳을 좋은 땅으로 만들려고 가져오는 가장 좋은 재료 곧 수백만 선한 교훈을 적어도 한 2만 마차나 처넣었지만 이 곳은 그저 ‘절망소’로 있고 이 후일지라도 무엇으로 어찌할 수 없을 것이외다. 다행히도 주께서 명하사 진흙 속에다가 튼튼한 좋은 징검다리를 놓게 하였으나 일기가 변작될 때에는(환경이 닥치고 대상만 생기면) 더러운 물결이 흘러 넘쳐서 징검다리를 보기가 어렵게 되고 혹 보인다 할지라도 사람들이 현기가 나서 징검다리가 거기 있음에도 불구하고 발을 헛디디므로 그만 진흙 투성이가 되고 맙니다. 죄악의 구렁에 빠집니다. 그러나 저 좁은 문으로 한번 들어간 후에는 땅이 아주 좋습니다.“ 하였다. 좁은 문을 통과한 성도의 마음 밭은 좋은 밭입니다. 이 때에 ‘연약’은 자기 집에 돌아갔다. 이웃 사람들이 저를 찾아보러 와서 혹은 그렇게 돌아온 것이 지혜로운 일이라고도 하고 혹은 ‘기독도’와 함께 무모한 일을 한 것이 어리석다고도 하고 또 혹은 저의 비겁한 것을 비웃어 말하기를 “나 같은 모험을 시작하였다가 조그만 어려운 일이 있다고 중도에 폐할 그런 비겁이 없을 것이다.” 하였다. 그리하여 ‘연약’은 모인 좌중에서 부끄러워 머리 둘 것을 몰라하더니 나중에는 다소의 기운을 얻었다. 그리고 여러 사람들이 돌라 붙어서 거기 없는 ‘기독도’를 무정하게도 비웃고 ‘연약’에 대하여는 여러 가지로 말하였다. THE SLOUGH OF DESPOND Now I saw in my dream that, just as they had ended this talk, they drew near to a very miry slough that was in the midst of the plain; and they being heedless, did both fall suddenly into the bog. The name of the slough was "Despond." Here, therefore, they wallowed for a time, being grievously bedaubed with the dirt; and CHRISTIAN, because of the burden that was on his back, began to sink in the mire. Pli. Then said PLIABLE, "Ah! neighbour CHRISTIAN, where are you now?" Chr. "Truly," said CHRISTIAN, "I do not know." Pli. At that PLIABLE began to be offended, and angrily said to his fellow, "Is this the happiness you have told me of all this while? If we have such ill speed at our first setting out, what may we expect 'twixt this and our journey's end? If I get out again with my life, you shall possess the brave country alone." And with that he gave a desperate struggle or two, and got out of the mire on that side of the slough which was next to his own house: so away he went, and CHRISTIAN saw him no more. Wherefore CHRISTIAN was left to tumble in the Slough of Despond alone; but still he endeavoured to struggle to that side of the slough that was farthest from his own house, and next to the wicket gate: which he did, but could not get out, because of the burden that was upon his back. But I beheld, in my dream, that a man came to him whose name was HELP, and asked him what he did there? Chr. "Sir," said CHRISTIAN, "I was bidden to go this way by a man called EVANGELIST, who directed me also to yonder gate, that I might escape the wrath to come; and as I was going thither, I fell in here." Help. But why did you not look for the steps? Chr. Fear followed me so hard, that I fled the next way and fell in. Help. Then said he, "Give me thy hand." So he gave him his hand, and he drew him out; and set him upon some ground, and bade him go on his way. "He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings." Psalm 40:2 Then I stepped to him that plucked him out, and said, "Sir, wherefore, since over this place is the way from the city of Destruction to yonder gate, is it that this plat is not mended, that poor travellers might go thither with more security?" And he said unto me, "This miry slough is such a place as cannot be mended: it is the descent whither the scum and filth that attends conviction for sin doth continually run; and therefore it is called the Slough of Despond. For still, as the sinner is awakened about his lost condition, there arises in his soul many fears and doubts, and discouraging apprehensions, which all of them get together, and settle in this place: and this is the reason of the badness of this ground. "It is not the pleasure of the King that this place should remain so bad; "Strengthen ye the weak hands, and confirm the feeble knees. Say to them that are of a fearful heart, Be strong, fear not: behold, your God will come with vengeance, even God with a recompence; he will come and save you."
