"Oil for the light" (Exodus 25: 6).

My soul, how much you need this!  Your lamp will not continue to burn long without it.  You have no oil well springing up in your human nature.  Even the consecrated lamps could not give light without oil.  Under the most happy circumstances you cannot give light for another hour unless fresh oil of grace is given you.  Not every oil could be used in the Lord's service.  Neither the petroleum which exudes so plentifully from the earth nor the produce of fishes nor that extracted from nuts would be accepted.  Only the best olive oil was selected.  Pretended grace from natural goodness or imaginary grace from outward ceremonies will never serve the true saint of God.  He knows that the Lord would not be pleased with these.  He goes to the olive-press of Gethsemane and draws his supplies from Him who was crushed therein.  The oil of gospel grace is pure, and hence the light which is fed thereon is clear and bright.  Our churches are the Savior's golden candelabra.  If they are to be lights in this dark world, they must have much holy oil.  Let us pray for ourselves, our ministers, and our churches, that they may never lack oil for the light.  Truth, holiness, joy, knowledge, and love are all beams of the sacred light.  But we cannot exemplify them unless we receive oil from God the Holy Spirit in private.

  "등유와 관유"(출25:6)

나의 영혼아! 너는 얼마나 등유(oil for the light)를 필요로 하는가!  너의 등불은 등유 없이는 오래 탈수 없을 것이다.  너는 너의 본성 안에서 샘솟는 기름샘을 갖고 있지 않다. 비록 봉헌된 성소의 등불일지라도 기름 없이는 빛을 줄 수 없다. 너는 가장 행복한 환경 속에서도 신선한 은혜의 기름을 받지 못하는 한 너는 다른 시간을 위한 빛을 줄 수 없다. 아무 기름이나 다 성전에서 주의 예배를 위하여 사용될 수 없다. 땅에서 풍성히 스며 나오는 석유도 안되고, 고기에서 나오는 어유도 안되고, 견과류의 기름도 용납되지 않는다.

오직 가장 좋은 감람유만이 선택된다. 자연적 선(自然的 善, 인간 본성의 인애 심 등)에서 나오는 겉치레 은혜나, 외적 의식(儀式)에서 오는 허상(虛想)의 은혜는 진실한 하나님의 성도에게 결코 도움이 되지 않을 것이다. 진실한 성도는 주님이 이런 것들을 기뻐하시지 않는다는 것을 안다.  그래서 그는 겟세마네 동산의 감람유 기름틀로 가서 그 기름틀에서 부셔진 주님의 몸에서 감람유를 공급 받는다. 복음의 은혜의 기름은 순결하다. 그리고 그 기름으로 타는 불빛은 맑고 밝다. 우리들의 교회들은 우리 구주의 금촛대들이다. 그러므로 우리 교회들이 이 어두운 세상에서 빛들이 되려면 교회들은 많은 성유(holy oil)를 가져야 한다.

결코 빛을 위한 기름이 부족하지 않도록 우리 자신을 위하여, 우리의 목사님들(사역자들)을 위하여, 그리고 우리의 교회를 위하여 우리 모두 기도합시다. 진실과 성결과 기쁨과 지식과 사랑은 모두 신성한 하나님의 빛의 빛살입니다. 그러나 우리는 성령 하나님으로부터 내밀히 기름을 받지 않는 한(즉 성령충만하지 않는 한) 이 모든 것들을 예증(例證)할 수 없습니다.
