이사야 43:2 네가 물 가운데로 지날 때에 내가 너와 함께 할 것이라 강을 건널 때에 물이 너를 침몰하지 못할 것이며 네가 불 가운데로 지날 때에 타지도 아니할 것이요 불꽃이 너를 사르지도 못하리니
하나님께서는 우리가 길 앞에 서기 전까지는 길을 열지 아니하십니다. 도움이 필요할 때 도움을 주십니다. 장애물 앞에 서야 그 장애물을 제거해 주십니다. 그렇습니다. 도움이 필요한 지점에 이르면 그분께서 손을 내밀어 주십니다.
많은 이들이 이러한 사실을 잊은 채 아직 오지도 않은 어려움을 붙들고 끝없이 고민합니다. 하나님께서 수십 리 앞길까지 훤히 뚫어 주시리라고 그들은 기대하지만, 그분께서는 한 걸음씩 차근히 데려가시고, 필요가 생겨야 도와주겠다고 약속하십니다. 하나님의 약속을 주장하려면 먼저 격류 앞에 서 있어야 합니다. 많은 이들이 죽음을 두려워하며 차라리 "죽는 은혜” 라도 누렸으면 좋겠다는 식으로 비관하는데, 아직 사지가 멀쩡하니 그들에게 죽음의 은혜가 허락될 리가 없습니다. 살아서 할 일이 많고 죽음은 까마득히 먼데, 왜 그들이 그런 은혜를 받아야 합니까? 필생의 사역과 소명을 이루려면 사는 은혜가 필요하거니와, 죽는 은혜는 죽을 때가 되면 옵니다.
"네가 물 가운데로 지날 때에”
물결 도도하고 차겠으나
여호와께서 우리의 피난처요,
그분의 약속 우리의 산성이라.
신실하고 참되신 하나님,
그분께서 친히 말씀하셨으니
"너 물 건너갈 때
잠기지 아니하고 지나가리라."
슬픔과 시련의 바다,
쓰디쓴 고통과 괴로움,
저 높은 유혹의 파도,
사방에서 밀려오겠으나
우리를 삼키지는 못하리라,
그분의 말씀 참되다는 것 우리 알기에.
그분의 파도요 그분의 물결이니
우리 안전하게 인도하시리라.
부술 듯이 달려드는 파도,
사악한 의심의 역류,
우리를 가라앉게도, 저 깊은
저주의 바다로 끌어가지도 못하리라.
그분의 약속 우리를 붙드시니
주님을 찬양하라, 그분의 말씀 참되다!
우리 잠기지도 가라앉지도 아니하리라,
그분 말씀하셨으니, "네가 지나가리라."

When you pass through the waters . . . they will not sweep over you. (Isaiah 43:2)
God does not open paths for us before we come to them, or provide help before help is needed. He does not remove obstacles out of our way before we reach them. Yet when we are at our point of need, God’s hand is outstretched.
Many people forget this truth and continually worry about difficulties they envision in the future. They expect God to open and clear many miles of road before them, but He promises to do it step by step, only as their need arises. You must be in the floodwaters before you can claim God’s promise. Many people dread death and are distressed that they do not have “dying grace.” Of course, they will never have the grace for death when they are in good health. Why should they have it while in the midst of life’s duties, with death still far away? Living grace is what is needed for life’s work and calling, and then dying grace when it is time to die. J. R. “When you pass through the waters”
Deep the waves may be and cold,
But Jehovah is our refuge,
And His promise is our hold;
For the Lord Himself has said it,
He, the faithful God and true:
“When you come to the waters
You will not go down, BUT THROUGH.”
Seas of sorrow, seas of trial,
Bitter anguish, fiercest pain,
Rolling surges of temptation
Sweeping over heart and brain—
They will never overflow us
For we know His word is true;
All His waves and all His billows
He will lead us safely THROUGH.
Threatening breakers of destruction,
Doubt’s insidious undertow,
Will not sink us, will not drag us
Out to ocean depths of woe;
For His promise will sustain us,
Praise the Lord, whose Word is true!
We will not go down, or under,
For He says, “You will pass THROUGH.”
