25:13 며칠 뒤 아그립바 왕과 버니게가 베스도에게 문안하러 가이사랴에 도착했습니다.
25:14 그들이 그곳에서 여러 날을 지내고 있었기 때문에 베스도는 바울의 사건에 대해 왕과 논의하게 됐습니다. 베스도가 말했습니다. “이곳에 벨릭스가 죄수로 가둬 놓은 사람이 있는데
25:15 내가 예루살렘에 갔을 때 대제사장들과 유대 장로들이 그를 고소하고 유죄 판결을 내려 달라고 청원했습니다.
25:16 고소인들과 맞닥뜨려 그 고소한 내용에 대해 스스로 변호할 기회를 갖기 전까지는 어느 누구든 넘겨주는 것이 로마 관례가 아니라고 설명해 주었습니다.
25:17 그래서 그들이 나와 함께 여기 오게 됐고 나는 그 사건을 연기하지 않고 바로 그 다음날 법정을 열어 그 사람을 데려오게 했습니다.
25:18 그러자 고소인들이 일어나서 말했는데 그들이 고소한 것은 내가 짐작했던 죄가 아니었습니다.
25:19 그들의 논쟁거리는 그저 그들의 종교와 예수라고 하는 죽은 사람에 대한 것이었습니다. 바울은 예수가 다시 살았다고 주장하고 있었습니다.
25:20 나는 이 사건을 어떻게 해결할까 망설이다가 그에게 예루살렘으로 가서 이 고소에 대해 재판받을 마음이 있냐고 물어 보았습니다.
25:21 그랬더니 바울은 로마 황제의 판결을 받겠다고 상소해서 내가 그를 황제께 보낼 때까지 붙들어 두라고 명령했습니다.”
25:22 그러자 아그립바가 베스도에게 말했습니다. “내가 직접 그 사람의 말을 들어보고 싶습니다.” 그러자 베스도는 “내일 한번 들어 보십시오”라고 대답했습니다.
25:23 이튿날 아그립바와 버니게가 위엄 있게 차려입고 와서 높은 관료들과 그 도시의 지도자들과 함께 재판정으로 들어갔습니다. 베스도의 명령에 바울이 들어왔습니다.
25:24 베스도가 말했습니다. “아그립바 왕이여, 그리고 우리와 함께 여기 참석한 모든 분들이여, 이 사람을 보십시오. 예루살렘에서 또 여기 가이사랴에서 모든 유대 사람들이 그를 살려 둬서는 안 된다고 외치며 내게 탄원했습니다.
25:25 내가 살펴보니 그가 사형받을 만한 일을 한 적이 없습니다. 그런데 그가 로마 황제께 상소하겠다고 해서 내가 그를 로마에 보내기로 결정했습니다.
25:26 그러나 그에 대해 황제께 확실하게 써 보낼 말이 없기 때문에 여러분 모두 앞에, 특별히 아그립바 왕 앞에 이 사람을 데려온 것이니 이번 조사의 결과로 뭔가 상소할 것이 생기지 않을까 합니다.
25:27 고소 내용도 구체적으로 명기하지 않고 죄수를 보내는 것은 상식 밖의 일이기 때문입니다.”
26:1 그때 아그립바가 바울에게 말했습니다. “네 자신을 위해 변호할 것을 허락하노라.” 그러자 바울은 손을 들어 변호를 시작했습니다.
26:2 “아그립바 왕이여, 제가 오늘 당신 앞에 서서 유대 사람들의 모든 모함에 대해 저 자신을 변호하게 된 것을 다행으로 여깁니다.
26:3 특히 왕께서는 모든 유대 관습과 문제에 대해 잘 알고 계시니 더욱 그렇습니다. 그러니 제 말을 끝까지 들어주시기를 간절히 바랍니다.
26:4 유대 사람들은 제가 어릴 적부터 제 고향과 예루살렘에서 어떻게 살아왔는지 다 알고 있습니다.
26:5 그들은 오랫동안 저를 알았고 제가 우리 종교의 가장 엄격한 종파를 좇아 바리새파 사람으로서 어떻게 살았는지 증명할 수도 있을 것입니다.
26:6 그런데 제가 오늘 재판을 받는 것은 하나님께서 우리 조상들에게 약속하신 것에 소망을 두고 있기 때문입니다.
26:7 이것은 우리 열두 지파가 밤낮으로 하나님을 열심히 섬기면서 이뤄지기를 바라던 바로 그 약속입니다. 왕이여, 바로 이 소망 때문에 유대 사람들이 저를 고소하고 있는 것입니다.
26:8 여러분은 왜 하나님께서 죽은 사람을 다시 살리신다는 것을 믿지 못할 일로 생각합니까?
26:9 저도 한때는 나사렛 예수의 이름을 반대하기 위해서라면 무엇이든 다해야 한다고 확신했던 사람입니다.
26:10 제가 예루살렘에서 했던 일이 바로 그런 일입니다. 대제사장들의 권한을 받아 많은 성도들을 감옥에 가두었고 그들이 죽임을 당할 때 찬성했습니다.
26:11 여러 회당들을 다니며 그들을 여러 번 처벌했으며 강제로 그들에게 모독하는 말을 하도록 했습니다. 그들에게 격분한 나머지 다른 나라 도시까지도 찾아가 핍박했습니다.
26:12 그런 일로 다니던 가운데 나는 대제사장들의 권한과 위임을 받아 다메섹으로 가고 있었습니다.
26:13 정오쯤이었는데, 오 왕이여, 길을 가고 있는데 하늘로부터 해보다 더 밝은 빛이 저와 제 일행을 둘러싸며 비추었습니다.
26:14 우리는 모두 땅에 엎드러졌습니다. 그때 제게 히브리 말로 말씀하시는 음성이 들렸습니다. ‘사울아, 사울아, 네가 왜 나를 핍박하느냐? 가시 채찍을 뒷발질해 봐야 너만 다칠 뿐이다.’
26:15 그래서 제가 물었습니다. ‘주여, 당신은 누구십니까?’ 그러자 주께서 대답하셨습니다. ‘나는 네가 핍박하는 예수다.
26:16 이제 일어나 똑바로 서거라. 내가 네게 나타난 것은 너를 내 일꾼으로 삼아 네가 본 것과 앞으로 내가 네게 보여 줄 것을 사람들에게 증거하도록 하기 위함이다.
26:17 내가 이 백성과 이방 사람들에게서 너를 구원해 이방 사람들에게로 보낼 것이다.
26:18 이제 너는 그들의 눈을 뜨게 하고 그들을 어둠에서 빛으로, 사탄의 권세에서 하나님께로 돌아오게 해 그들이 죄 용서를 받고 나를 믿어 거룩하게 된 사람들 가운데 기업을 얻게 할 것이다.’
26:19 아그립바 왕이여, 그래서 저는 하늘에서 보여 주신 이 환상에 거역하지 않고
26:20 먼저 다메섹 사람들에게, 다음으로 예루살렘 사람들과 온 유대 사람들에게 그리고 이방 사람들에게까지 그들이 회개하고 하나님께 돌아와 회개에 합당한 행동을 보이라고 선포했습니다.
26:21 바로 이 때문에 유대 사람들이 성전에서 저를 붙잡아 죽이려고 했던 것입니다.
26:22 그러나 저는 바로 이날까지 하나님의 도움을 받아 왔기에 여기 서서 높고 낮은 모든 사람들에게 증언하고 있는 것입니다. 저는 모세와 예언자들이 앞으로 일어나리라고 예언한 것 외에는 아무것도 말하지 않았습니다.
26:23 그것은 그리스도께서 고난을 당하셔서 죽은 사람들 가운데 가장 먼저 부활하심으로 이스라엘 백성과 이방 사람들에게 빛을 선포하시리라는 것입니다.”
26:24 바울이 이같이 말하자 베스도가 바울의 변호를 가로막으며 소리쳤습니다. “바울아, 네가 미쳤구나! 네 많은 학식이 너를 미치게 했구나.”
26:25 바울이 대답했습니다. “베스도 각하, 저는 미치지 않았습니다. 제가 드리는 말씀은 사실이며 제정신으로 하는 말입니다.
26:26 왕께서는 이 사실을 알고 계시므로 제가 거리낌없이 말할 수 있습니다. 이것은 어느 한 구석에서 일어난 일이 아니기 때문에 어떤 것 하나라도 왕께서 모르고 넘어가셨을 리 없다고 저는 확신합니다.
26:27 아그립바 왕이여, 예언자들을 믿으십니까? 왕께서 믿으시는 줄 제가 압니다.”
26:28 그러자 아그립바가 바울에게 말했습니다. “네가 이 짧은 시간에 나를 그리스도의 사람으로 만들 수 있다고 생각하느냐?”
26:29 바울이 대답했습니다. “짧은 시간이든 긴 시간이든 왕뿐 아니라 오늘 제 말을 듣고 있는 모든 분들이 이 쇠사슬을 제외하고는 저처럼 되기를 하나님께 기도합니다.”
26:30 그러자 아그립바 왕이 일어났고 베스도 총독과 버니게 그리고 그들과 함께 앉아 있던 사람들도 다 일어났습니다.
26:31 그들은 밖으로 나가면서 “이 사람은 사형이나 징역을 받을 만한 일은 하지 않았다”라고 서로 말했습니다.
26:32 아그립바는 베스도에게 “이 사람이 황제께 상소하지만 않았더라도 석방될 수 있었을 것이오”라고 말했습니다.

25:13 A few days later King Agrippa and Bernice arrived at Caesarea to pay their respects to Festus.
25:14 Since they were spending many days there, Festus discussed Paul’s case with the king. He said: “There is a man here whom Felix left as a prisoner.
25:15 When I went to Jerusalem, the chief priests and the elders of the Jews brought charges against him and asked that he be condemned.
25:16 “I told them that it is not the Roman custom to hand over anyone before they have faced their accusers and have had an opportunity to defend themselves against the charges.
25:17 When they came here with me, I did not delay the case, but convened the court the next day and ordered the man to be brought in.
25:18 When his accusers got up to speak, they did not charge him with any of the crimes I had expected.
25:19 Instead, they had some points of dispute with him about their own religion and about a dead man named Jesus who Paul claimed was alive.
25:20 I was at a loss how to investigate such matters; so I asked if he would be willing to go to Jerusalem and stand trial there on these charges.
25:21 But when Paul made his appeal to be held over for the Emperor’s decision, I ordered him held until I could send him to Caesar.”
25:22 Then Agrippa said to Festus, “I would like to hear this man myself.” He replied, “Tomorrow you will hear him.”
25:23 The next day Agrippa and Bernice came with great pomp and entered the audience room with the high-ranking military officers and the prominent men of the city. At the command of Festus, Paul was brought in.
25:24 Festus said: “King Agrippa, and all who are present with us, you see this man! The whole Jewish community has petitioned me about him in Jerusalem and here in Caesarea, shouting that he ought not to live any longer.
25:25 I found he had done nothing deserving of death, but because he made his appeal to the Emperor I decided to send him to Rome.
25:26 But I have nothing definite to write to His Majesty about him. Therefore I have brought him before all of you, and especially before you, King Agrippa, so that as a result of this investigation I may have something to write.
25:27 For I think it is unreasonable to send a prisoner on to Rome without specifying the charges against him.”
26:1 Then Agrippa said to Paul, “You have permission to speak for yourself.” So Paul motioned with his hand and began his defense:
26:2 “King Agrippa, I consider myself fortunate to stand before you today as I make my defense against all the accusations of the Jews,
26:3 and especially so because you are well acquainted with all the Jewish customs and controversies. Therefore, I beg you to listen to me patiently.
26:4 “The Jewish people all know the way I have lived ever since I was a child, from the beginning of my life in my own country, and also in Jerusalem.
26:5 They have known me for a long time and can testify, if they are willing, that I conformed to the strictest sect of our religion, living as a Pharisee.
26:6 And now it is because of my hope in what God has promised our ancestors that I am on trial today.
26:7 This is the promise our twelve tribes are hoping to see fulfilled as they earnestly serve God day and night. King Agrippa, it is because of this hope that these Jews are accusing me.
26:8 Why should any of you consider it incredible that God raises the dead?
26:9 “I too was convinced that I ought to do all that was possible to oppose the name of Jesus of Nazareth.
26:10 And that is just what I did in Jerusalem. On the authority of the chief priests I put many of the Lord’s people in prison, and when they were put to death, I cast my vote against them.
26:11 Many a time I went from one synagogue to another to have them punished, and I tried to force them to blaspheme. I was so obsessed with persecuting them that I even hunted them down in foreign cities.
26:12 “On one of these journeys I was going to Damascus with the authority and commission of the chief priests.
26:13 About noon, King Agrippa, as I was on the road, I saw a light from heaven, brighter than the sun, blazing around me and my companions.
26:14 We all fell to the ground, and I heard a voice saying to me in Aramaic,* ‘Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me? It is hard for you to kick against the goads.’ / *Or Hebrew
26:15 “Then I asked, ‘Who are you, Lord?’ “ ‘I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,’ the Lord replied.
26:16 ‘Now get up and stand on your feet. I have appeared to you to appoint you as a servant and as a witness of what you have seen and will see of me.
26:17 I will rescue you from your own people and from the Gentiles. I am sending you to them
26:18 to open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.’
26:19 “So then, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the vision from heaven.
26:20 First to those in Damascus, then to those in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and then to the Gentiles, I preached that they should repent and turn to God and demonstrate their repentance by their deeds.
26:21 That is why some Jews seized me in the temple courts and tried to kill me.
26:22 But God has helped me to this very day; so I stand here and testify to small and great alike. I am saying nothing beyond what the prophets and Moses said would happen -
26:23 that the Messiah would suffer and, as the first to rise from the dead, would bring the message of light to his own people and to the Gentiles.”
26:24 At this point Festus interrupted Paul’s defense. “You are out of your mind, Paul!” he shouted. “Your great learning is driving you insane.”
26:25 “I am not insane, most excellent Festus,” Paul replied. “What I am saying is true and reasonable.
26:26 The king is familiar with these things, and I can speak freely to him. I am convinced that none of this has escaped his notice, because it was not done in a corner.
26:27 King Agrippa, do you believe the prophets? I know you do.”
26:28 Then Agrippa said to Paul, “Do you think that in such a short time you can persuade me to be a Christian?”
26:29 Paul replied, “Short time or long - I pray to God that not only you but all who are listening to me today may become what I am, except for these chains.”
26:30 The king rose, and with him the governor and Bernice and those sitting with them.
26:31 After they left the room, they began saying to one another, “This man is not doing anything that deserves death or imprisonment.”
26:32 Agrippa said to Festus, “This man could have been set free if he had not appealed to Caesar.”
