2월 26일 고린도후서 12:9 나에게 이르시기를 내 은혜가 네게 족하도다 이는 내 능력이 약한 데서 온전하여짐이라 하신지라 그러므로 도리어 크게 기뻐함으로 나의 여러 약한 것들에 대하여 자랑하리니 이는 그리스도의 능력이 내게 머물게 하려 함이라
며칠 전 말을 타고 집으로 돌아오던 때의 일입니다. 그날 하루 일이 유독 힘들었던 터라 많이 지치고 우울했습니다. 그때 내게 거의 번갯불이 치듯 한순간에 말씀이 왔습니다. “내 은혜가 네게 족하도다.” 집에 도착해서 말씀을 펴고, 그 구절을 찾아보았습니다. 그리고 최종적으로 내게 온 말씀은 이렇습니다.
“내 은혜가 네게 족하도다." 이 말씀을 읽으며 나는 말씀드렸습니다. “주님 왜 아니겠습니까!" 나는 웃지 않을 수 없었습니다.
그리고 비로소 아브라함의 거룩한 웃음을 이해하게 되었습니다. 이 구절은 불신과 의심이 얼마나 어이없는 일인가를 보여주는 듯했습니다. 목마른 작은 물고기를 상상해 보았습니다. 이 물고기는 자신이 강물을 다 마셔서 강이 마르면 어쩌나 걱정이 태산입니다. 강이 말합니다. “작은 물고기야, 얼마든지 마셔서 없애라. 내 강물이 네게 족하다.” 칠 년간의 풍년 후에 굶어 죽을까 근심하는 생쥐를 상상해 보았습니다. 요셉이 말합니다. 힘내라, 작은 생쥐야, 내 곡식이 네게 족하다.” 산 정상에 올라 중얼거리는 남자를 상상해 보았습니다. 내가 매년 마시는 공기의 양이 엄청난데 이러다가 내가 대기 중의 산소를 완전히 고갈시키는 것은 아닐까.” 지구가 그에게 말합니다. "얼마든지 마저 없애라. 당신의 폐를 영원히 채워라. 내 대기가 네게 족하다."
하나님의 백성들이여, 큰 신자가 됩시다! 작은 믿음은 여러분의 영혼을 천국으로 데려가겠지만, 큰 믿음은 천국을 여러분의 영혼에게로 데려옵니다.
하나님의 은혜 족하니 큰 것들 능히 다루신다~
영혼을 짓누르는 엄청난 파도,
숨도 못 쉬게 날려 버리는 노대바람,
우리의 목숨마저 위태롭게 하는 태풍.
하나님의 은혜 족하니 작은 것들 능히 다루신다
가시같이 잔 괴로움,
웅웅대며 달라붙는 벌레 같은 근심,
우리의 기쁨 갉아대는 백백한 바퀴 소리,

More Than Sufficient
My grace is sufficient for thee — 2 Cor 12:9
The other evening I was riding home after a heavy day’s work. I felt very wearied, and sore depressed, when swiftly, and suddenly as a lightning flash, that text came to me, “My grace is sufficient for thee.” I reached home and looked it up in the original, and at last it came to me in this way, “MY grace is sufficient for thee”; and I said, “I should think it is, Lord,” and burst out laughing. I never fully understood what the holy laughter of Abraham was until then. It seemed to make unbelief so absurd. It was as though some little fish, being very thirsty, was troubled about drinking the river dry, and Father Thames said, “Drink away, little fish, my stream is sufficient for thee.” Or, it seemed after the seven years of plenty, a mouse feared it might die of famine; and Joseph might say, “Cheer up, little mouse, my granaries are sufficient for thee.” Again, I imagined a man away up yonder, in a lofty mountain, saying to himself, “I breathe so many cubic feet of air every year, I fear I shall exhaust the oxygen in the atmosphere,” but the earth might say, “Breathe away, O man, and fill the lungs ever, my atmosphere is sufficient for thee.” Oh, brethren, be great believers!
