우리는 흔히 느낌과 감정을 믿음으로 오인합니다. 즐거운 감정과 깊고 만족스러운 체험이 신앙생활의 한 부분인 것은 맞지만 적어도 핵심은 아닙니다. 시련, 갈등, 투쟁, 시험이 우리 앞길에 놓여 있습니다. 우리는 이러한 상황을 단순한 불행이 아니라 필요한 훈련으로 여겨야 합니다. 이 모든 체험의 과정에서 우리는 그리스도께 순종하는 마음으로 걸으며, 감정이 어떠하든 그리스도의 내주하심에 의지해야 합니다. 그런데 많은 그리스도인들이 이 지점에서 문제에 봉착합니다. 그들은 믿음보다는 느낌에 의지해 걷고자 합니다.
어떤 신자가 한 번은 하나님께서 자신을 완전히 떠나가신 것 같다는 얘기를 했습니다. "그분의 자비가 사라진 것 같았습니다.” 그녀의 외로움은 여섯 주를 갔는데, 마침내 하늘의 사랑하시는 분께서 이렇게 말씀하시는 듯했습니다. "너는 바깥에 있는 감정의 세계에서 나를 찾았지만, 그동안 나는 너를 안에서 기다렸다. 이제 안에 있는 네 영혼의 방으로 와서 나를 만나거라. 내가 거기 있다." 하나님께서 임재해 계시다는 사실과 그것이 사실일 것 같다는 느낌을 잘 구분해야 합니다. 우리 영혼이 외롭고 쓸쓸해도 믿음으로 이처럼 말할 수 있다면 얼마나 아름다운 일이겠습니까. “주님, 당신의 모습 보이지 않고 당신의 임재 느낄 수 없으나, 은혜로우신 당신께서 이곳에 계심을 나는 명백히 압니다. 내가 있는 이곳, 내 환경이라고 인식하는 이곳에 당신께서 계십니다.” 그렇습니다. 우리는 거듭해서 말씀드리며 다짐해야 합니다. “주님, 당신께서 여기 계십니다. 내 앞의 떨기나무가 불붙지 않은 듯 보여도 그것은 불붙어 있습니다. 그러므로 나는 신을 벗겠습니다. 내가 선 곳은 거룩한 땅' (출 3:5)입니다."
여러분의 느낌과 경험에서 오는 확신 이상으로 하나님의 말씀과 능력을 신뢰합시다. 기억합시다. 물때에 따라 들고 나는 것은 바다이지 결코 반석이신 그분이 아니십니다.
그리스도께서 이루신 큰일과 그분의 무한한 의로우심을 바라봅시다. 예수 바라보며 믿고 예수 바라보며 사십시오! 요컨대 그분 바라보며 돛을 펴고 바다의 거센 폭풍에 맞서야 합니다. 불신을 드러내며 안전한 항구에 머물러 있거나 편안히 잠들어 쉽게 인생을 보내서는 안 되겠습니다. 우리의 삶과 감정이 선창에 묶인 배들처럼 한가하게 흔들리면 안 됩니다. 그리스도인의 삶은 끝없이 감정에 젖음도 아니요, 장대한 믿음의 용골을 끌고 얕은 물에 떠다님도 아닙니다. 또 우리의 희망의 닻을 좀처럼 헤어날 수 없는 안쪽 바다 진창에 내림도 아닙니다.
큰 바다로 갑시다! 돛을 펴서 폭풍을 향해 나아가며 성난 바다 다스리시는 이를 의지하십시오. 색이 화려한 새는 날고 있을 때가 가장 안전합니다. 둥지가 지면에 가깝거나 새 자체가 너무 낮게 날아다니면 사냥꾼의 그물에 걸리기 쉽습니다. 우리 역시 느낌과 감정의 저지대에 박혀 움츠리면, 의심과 절망과 유혹과 불신의 그물에 걸리지 않을 수 없습니다. 그러므로 높이 날아 그물이 어디 있는지를 봐야 합니다. 새가 보는 데서 그물을 치면 헛일이 되기 때문입니다(잠 1:17). “너는 하나님께 소망을 두라" (시 42:5). 확신의 믿음이 느껴지지 않을 경우, 나는 하나님은 신실하시다는 사실을 붙들고 삽니다.

The Just Shall Live by Faith
The just shall live by faith. — Heb 10:38
Seemings and feelings are often substituted for faith. Pleasurable emotions and deep satisfying experiences are part of the Christian life, but they are not all of it. Trials, conflicts, battles and testings lie along the way, and are not to be counted as misfortunes, but rather as part of our necessary discipline.
In all these varying experiences we are to reckon on Christ as dwelling in the heart, regardless of our feelings if we are walking obediently before Him. Here is where many get into trouble; they try to walk by feeling rather than faith.
One of the saints tells us that it seemed as though God had withdrawn Himself from her. His mercy seemed clean gone. For six weeks her desolation lasted, and then the Heavenly Lover seemed to say:
“Catherine, thou hast looked for Me without in the world of sense, but all the while I have been within waiting for thee; meet Me in the inner chamber of thy spirit, for I am there.”
Distinguish between the fact of God’s presence, and the emotion of the fact. It is a happy thing when the soul seems desolate and deserted, if our faith can say, “I see Thee not. I feel Thee not, but Thou art certainly and graciously here, where I am as I am.” Say it again and again: “Thou art here: though the bush does not seem to burn with fire, it does burn. I will take the shoes from off my feet, for the place on which I stand is holy ground.” — London Christian
Believe God’s word and power more than you believe your own feelings and experiences. Your Rock is Christ, and it is not the Rock which ebbs and flows, but your sea. — Samuel Rutherford
Keep your eye steadily fixed on the infinite grandeur of Christ’s finished work and righteousness. Look to Jesus and believe, look to Jesus and live! Nay, more; as you look to him, hoist your sails and buffet manfully the sea of life. Do not remain in the haven of distrust, or sleeping on your shadows in inactive repose, or suffering your frames and feelings to pitch and toss on one another like vessels idly moored in a harbor. The religious life is not a brooding over emotions, grazing the keel of faith in the shallows, or dragging the anchor of hope through the oozy tide mud as if afraid of encountering the healthy breeze. Away! With your canvas spread to the gale, trusting in Him, who rules the raging of the waters. The safety of the tinted bird is to be on the wing. If its haunt be near the ground — if it fly low — it exposes itself to the fowler’s net or snare. If we remain grovelling on the low ground of feeling and emotion, we shall find ourselves entangled in a thousand meshes of doubt and despondency, temptation and unbelief. “But surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of THAT WHICH HATH A WING” (marginal reading Prov. 1:17).
