5월 24일 창세기 21:2 사라가 임신하고 하나님이 말씀하신 시기가 되어 노년의 아브라함에게 아들을 낳으니
"여호와의 계획은 영원히 서고 그의 생각은 대대에 이르리로다” (시 33:11). 하지만 우리는 하나님의 때를 기다릴 각오가 되어 있어야 합니다. 그분의 때는 정확하고, 그분께서는 정하신 그 "시기"에 행하십니다. 그분의 때를 아는 것은 우리의 일이 아니며, 사실 알 수도 없습니다. 우리는 기다리는 수밖에 없습니다.
아브라함이 하란에 있을 때 하나님께서 그에게 삼십 년을 기다려야 약속한 아들을 두 팔에 안을 수 있으리라고 말씀하셨다면, 그는 틀림없이 맥이 빠졌을 것입니다. 그래서 하나님은 당신의 자비로운 사랑을 보이셔서, 아브라함에게 그 길고 지칠 만한 기다림의 햇수를 숨기셨습니다. 그리고 불과 몇 달만 기다려도 될 만큼 때가 차서야 당신의 약속을 밝히셨습니다. “내년 봄 새싹 이 돋아날 무렵에... 사라는 이미 아들을 낳았을 것이다” (창 18:14, 공동번역), 마침내 정하신 "시기"가 차서 족장의 집에는 웃음이 가득했고, 노부부는 그간의 힘들었던 기다림을 한순간에 잊을 수 있었습니다.
그러니 하나님의 자녀들이여, 그분께서 기다리라 하실 때는 기운을 내십시오 여러분이 기다리는 분께서는 결코 여러분을 실망시키지 아니하십니다. 그분께서는 약속하신 “시기" 에서 오분도 늦지 않으실 것입니다. 곧 “(여러분의) 근심이 도리어 기쁨이 되리라”(요 16:20)고 말씀하십니다.
오, 하나님으로 인하여 웃는 영혼들은 얼마나 복됩니까! 그분께서 웃음을 주시는 그때가 되면, 어둠이 새벽을 피해 달아나듯 슬픔과 울음이 영원히 달아날 것입니다.
우리는 승객이니 해도와 나침반에 간섭할 수 없습니다. 능숙하신 선장께서만 그 일을 하시도록 맡겨야 합니다.
어떤 것들이 하루아침에 이루어질 수는 없습니다. 심지어 하나님께서도 그 장엄한 일몰을 한순간에 만드시지는 않습니다. 그분께서는 여러 날에 걸쳐 안개를 모으신 후에야, 그것으로 서쪽 하늘에 아름다운 궁전을 지으십니다.
영광스러운 아침이 언제 오느냐고 묻는가?
오, 누가 알리요? 저 험준한 산 들판이 되고
마른 땅이 비를 만나 젖으리니,
저 놋대문은 부서지고, 철창은 바뀌어
별까지 가는 사다리가 되리니,
거친 땅은 평탄해지고, 휘어진 길은 펴지리니,
끈질김으로 기다리는 자에게는 그러하리라.
이러한 일들 하나님 정하신 날에 있으리라.
내일에는 아니라도, 반드시 있으리

Wait on God's Time

The counsel of the Lord standeth forever, the thoughts of His heart to all generations — Ps 33:11
But we must be prepared to wait God’s time. God has His set times. It is not for us to know them; indeed, we cannot know them; we must wait for them.
If God had told Abraham in Haran that he must wait for thirty years until he pressed the promised child to his bosom, his heart would have failed him. So, in gracious love, the length of the weary years was hidden, and only as they were nearly spent, and there were only a few more months to wait, God told him that “according to the time of life, Sarah shall have a son.” (Gen. 18:14.)
The set time came at last; and then the laughter that filled the patriarch’s home made the aged pair forget the long and weary vigil.
Take heart, waiting one, thou waitest for One who cannot disappoint thee; and who will not be five minutes behind the appointed moment: ere long “your sorrow shall be turned into joy.”
Ah, happy soul, when God makes thee laugh! Then sorrow and crying shall flee away forever, as darkness before the dawn. — Selected
