7월 10일 아가 5:6 내가 내 사랑하는 자를 위하여 문을 열었으나 그는 벌써 물러갔네 그가 말할 때에 내 혼이 나갔구나 내가 그를 찾아도 못 만났고 불러도 응답이 없었노라
흔히 아는 대로, 하나님께서는 큰 믿음을 한 번 주시고 오래 지체하심으로 그 믿음을 시험하십니다. 그분께서는 종들의 음성을 자신들의 귓속에서만 맴돌게 하시는데, 그들의 기도는 마치 거만한 창공의 벽에 부딪혀 되돌아오는 듯합니다. 신자들은 하늘의 문을 두드리지만 경첩이 녹슨 듯 문은 꿈쩍도 하지 않습니다. 그들은 예레미야처럼 외칩니다. “주께서 구름으로 자신을 가리사 기도가 상달되지 못하게 하시고" (애 3:44). 하나님의 참된 성도들은 어떤 응답도 받지 못한 채 오랜 시간을 인내로 견뎠습니다. 그들의 기도가 강력하지 않아서도, 하나님께서 그들의 간구를 받아주지 않아서도 아니었습니다. 그러한 기다림은, 주권자로서 “자기의 기쁘신 뜻을 위하여" (빌 2:13) 행하시는 일이므로 그들은 기다려야 했습니다. 그리고 우리의 인내력을 길러 주심이 그분의 기쁨일진대, 그분께서 자녀들에게 뜻하신 대로 행하지 말아야 할 이유가 있습니까? 헛된 기도는 없으며 입에서 나오는 어떠한 기도도 무익하지 않습니다. 하나님께서 응답하지 않거나 알아채지 못하시는 기도 같은 것은 없습니다. 우리가 거절이나 거부한다고 여기는 어떤 것들은 지체일 뿐입니다.
그리스도께서는 때때로 도우심을 늦추시는데, 이는 우리의 믿음을 시험하고 우리의 기도에 활력을 불어넣으시기 위함입니다. 그분께서 주무시는 동안 우리의 배는 파도에 흔들리겠지만, 배가 가라앉기 전에 깨어나실 것입니다. 그분께서는 주무시되 오래 주무시지는 아니하십니다. 그러니 결코 늦으시는 법이 없습니다.
잠잠하라, 슬픈 영혼아, 절규는 거두고
헐벗은 네 영혼의 사막 펼쳐라.
전능하신 이의 깊은 눈이 보신다.
기다리라! 네 불안과 절망을 넘어
불쌍히 여기시며 하나님 오시리라, 그 황폐한
죽음의 땅, 빛과 생명과 봄기운으로 채우시리라.

Christ Sometimes Delays His Help
I called upon him, but he gave me no answer — Song 5:6
The Lord, when He hath given great faith, hath been known to try it by long delayings. He has suffered His servants’ voices to echo in their ears as from a brazen sky. They have knocked at the golden gate, but it has remained unmovable, as though it were rusted upon its hinges. Like Jeremiah, they have cried, “Thou hast covered thyself with a cloud, that our prayer should not pass through.” Thus have true saints continued long in patient waiting without reply, not because their prayers were not vehement, nor because they were unaccepted, but because it so pleased Him who is a Sovereign, and who gives according to His own pleasure. If it pleases Him to bid our patience exercise itself, shall He not do as He will with His own!
No prayer is lost. Praying breath was never spent in vain. There is no such thing as prayer unanswered or unnoticed by God, and some things that we count refusals or denials are simply delays. — H. Bonar
