8월 25일 갈라디아서 3:23 믿음이 오기 전에 우리는 율법 아래에 매인 바 되고 계시될 믿음의 때까지 갇혔느니라
오랜 과거에는 하나님께서 사람들을 그분의 율법 아래 복종하도록 하셨는데, 이는 더 훌륭한 믿음의 길을 배우도록 하시기 위함이었습니다. 바로 이 율법을 통해서 사람들은 하나님의 거룩한 기준을 보고 자신들의 무력함을 깨달았습니다. 그러고 나서 그들은 그분의 믿음의 길을 즐거이 배우고자 했습니다.
하나님께서는 지금도 우리를 믿음을 배우기 전까지는 갇혀 있도록 하십니다. 우리의 본성, 환경, 시련, 실망 등의 모든 것이 우리를 예속하고 가두는 도구인데, 이 상태는 우리가 그분의 믿음의 길만이 유일한 길임을 알 때까지 계속됩니다. 모세는 자신의 노력, 자신의 영향력, 심지어는 폭력에 의해서까지 자신의 백성을 구원하려고 했습니다. 그러므로 하나님께서 그를 당신의 일에 준비된 자 될 때까지 사십 년을 광야에 “가두셨습니다."
바울과 실라는 유럽으로 가서 복음을 전파하라는 하나님의 부르심을 받았습니다. 빌립보에서 그들은 갇혔습니다. "많이 친 후에......... 그들을 깊은 옥에 가두고 그 발을 차꼬에 든든히 채웠더니” (행 16:23-24). 그들은 믿음에 “갇혔습니다.” 그들은 그토록 암울하고 어두울 때 하나님을 의지하며 그분을 찬송했고, 하나님께서는 그들을 구해 내셨습니다.
사도 요한 역시 믿음에 갇혔습니다. 밧모섬으로 유배당했을 때였습니다. 그곳으로 보내지지 않았다면 그는 결코 하나님의 영광스러운 환상을 볼 수 없었을 것입니다.
사랑하는 독자들이여, 여러분은 지금 무서운 고난에 들어 있습니까? 말할 수 없는 낙심과 슬픔과 상실을 겪고 있습니까? 상황이 너무 어렵습니까? 힘내십시오! 여러분은 믿음에 “갇혀 있습니다.” 여러분의 고난을 그대로 받아들이고 하나님께 맡기십시오. “하나님을 사랑하는...... 자들에게는 모든 것이 합력하여 선을 이루” (롬 8:28) 는 것을 믿으며, 그분을 찬송하십시오. 그분께서 자기를 앙망하는 자를 위하여 이런 일을 행하신다(사 64:4)고 찬송하십시오. 하나님께서는 여러분에게 축복과 도움을 베푸시고, 그분 아니시면 결코 오지 못할 진리를 계시하실 것입니다. 여러분이 “갇혀” 믿음의 길을 배운 그 일로 인하여, 다른 여러 사람들 또한 크나큰 깨달음과 축복을 얻어 누릴 것입니다.
사람이 산들과 만났을 때 큰일이 이루어진다.
한낱 길거리를 걸어서는 이루어질 수 없는 일이다.

Shut Up To Faith
Shut up to faith — Gal 3:23
God, in olden time suffered man to be kept in ward by the law that he might learn the more excellent way of faith. For by the law he would see God’s holy standard and by the law he would see his own utter helplessness; then he would be glad to learn God’s way of faith.
God still shuts us up to faith. Our natures, our circumstances, trials, disappointments, all serve to shut us up and keep us in ward till we see that the only way out is God’s way of faith. Moses tried by self-effort, by personal influence, even by violence, to bring about the deliverance of his people. God had to shut him up forty years in the wilderness before he was prepared for God’s work.
Paul and Silas were bidden of God to preach the Gospel in Europe. They landed and proceeded to Philippi. They were flogged, they were shut up in prison, their feet were put fast in the stocks. They were shut up to faith. They trusted God. They sang praises to Him in the darkest hour, and God wrought deliverance and salvation.
John was banished to the Isle of Patmos. He was shut up to faith. Had he not been so shut up, he would never have seen such glorious visions of God.
Dear reader, are you in some great trouble? Have you had some great disappointment, have you met some sorrow, some unspeakable loss? Are you in a hard place? Cheer up! You are shut up to faith. Take your trouble the right way. Commit it to God. Praise Him that He maketh “all things work together for good,” and that “God worketh for him that waiteth for him.” There will be blessings, help and revelations of God that will come to you that never could otherwise have come; and many besides yourself will receive great light and blessing because you were shut up to faith. — C.
