위기가 닥쳤는데 뒷전에 앉아 있어야 하는 심정은 뭐라고 말하기가 어렵습니 다. 겟세마네 동산에서 이제 남은 열한 제자 가운데 여덟이 아무것도 하지 못하고 뒤에 앉아 있어야 했습니다. 예수께서 기도하러 가실 때 베드로와 야고보와 요한도 그분 곁에서 지켜보고자 함께 나섰습니다. 하지만 나머지 제자 들은 앉아서 기다려야 했습니다. 그들은 동산에 있었지만 그뿐, 그 동산의 꽃들을 가꾸는 일에는 참여하지 못했습니다. 지극히 중대하고 힘든 순간이었지만 함께 거들도록 허락받지 못한 것입니다.
여러분과 나도 분명히 이러한 경험이 있고, 같이 실망했었습니다. 아마 여러분 앞에 크나큰 섬김의 기회가 열리고 있었을 것입니다. 어떤 이들은 즉시 현장으로 가고, 또 어떤 이들은 파견을 위해 훈련받습니다. 그런데 여러분은 아무것도 하지 못하고 앉아서 기다릴 수밖에 없습니다. 질병이나 가난으로 길이 막혔을 수도 있고, 뭔가 잘못된 평판이 작용했을 수도 있습니다. 원인이야 어찌 됐든, 여러분은 섬김에서 제외되었습니다. 왜 자신이 섬김의 삶에서 배척당해야 하는지 이해할 수 없어 분노합니다. 동산에 들어오라고 해서 갔는데 정작 그 안에서는 길을 찾을 수 없으니, 불공평한 처사 같습니다.
사랑하는 영혼들이여, 잠잠하십시오. 실상은 그렇지 않습니다! 여러분은 그리스도인의 삶 어느 부분에서도 배제되지 않았습니다. 주님의 동산에 걷거나 서 있는 이들의 자리만 있다고 믿습니까? 아닙니다! 거기에는 앉아 있을 수밖에 없는 이들을 위한 자리도 있습니다. 동사에 능동태, 수동태, 중간태의 세 가지 태가 있듯이, "살다” 라는 그리스도의 동사에도 세 가지 태가 있습니다. 능동태 사람들은 곧장 싸움터로 달려가 해 질 때까지 분투합니다. 수동태 사람들은 가운데 서서 지켜보며 전투의 진행 상황을 보고합니다. 하지만 중간태 사람들은 싸울 수도 없고 싸움을 지켜볼 수도 없이 그냥 앉아서 기다려야 합니다.
이런 상황에 처했다 해서 배제되었다고 여기지 마십시오. 다른 누구도 아닌 그리스도께서 여러분에게 “여기 앉아 있으라" 하셨음을 기억해야 합니다. 동산에는 여러분의 자리 역시 따로 마련되어 있습니다. 하나님께서 여러분을 위해 특별히 선택하신 그 자리는 무작정 기다리기만 하는 자리가 아닙니다. 하나님께서 세상에 두신 삶이라고 한결같이 큰일을 이루거나 큰 짐을 져야 하는 것은 아닙니다. 하나님께서 그들에게 주신 일은 그냥 있는 것입니다. 그들은 중간태 동사이며, 활동적인 임무가 없는 동산의 꽃입니다. 그들은 위대한 승리를 거둔 적도 없고 잔치 자리에서 상석에 앉는 영광을 누린 바도 없으니, 베드로며 야고보며 요한 같은 사람들처럼 이목을 끌지 못합니다. 하지만 예수께서 그들을 보며 즐거워하십니다. 그들은 향기와 아름다움만으로 그분께 기쁨을 드립니다. 사랑스러운 모습으로 산 밑에 가만히 존재한다는 사실만으로도 주께서는 그들을 흡족해하십니다. 여러분들이 이러한 꽃들일진대 불평할 필요가 없습니다.

No Active Mission

It is a hard thing to be kept in the background at a time of crisis. In the Garden of Gethsemane eight of the eleven disciples were left to do nothing. Jesus went to the front to pray; Peter, James and John went to the middle to watch; the rest sat down in the rear to wait. Methinks that party in the rear must have murmured. They were in the garden, but that was all; they had no share in the cultivation of its flowers. It was a time of crisis, a time of storm and stress; and yet they were not suffered to work.
You and I have often felt that experience, that disappointment. There has arisen, mayhap a great opportunity for Christian service. Some are sent to the front; some are sent to the middle. But we are made to lie down in the rear. Perhaps sickness has come; perhaps poverty has come; perhaps obloquy has come; in any case we are hindered and we feel sore. We do not see why we should be excluded from a part in the Christian life. It seems like an unjust thing that, seeing we have been allowed to enter the garden, no path should be assigned to us there.
Be still, my soul, it is not as thou deemest! Thou art not excluded from a part of the Christian life. Thinkest thou that the garden of the Lord has only a place for those who walk and for those who stand! Nay, it has a spot consecrated to those who are compelled to sit. There are three voices in a verb — active, passive and neuter. So, too, there are three voices in Christ’s verb “to live.” There are the active, watching souls, who go to the front, and struggle till the breaking of the day. There are the passive, watching souls, who stand in the middle, and report to others the progress of the fight. But there are also the neuter souls — those who can neither fight, nor be spectators of the fight, but have simply to lie down.
When that experience comes to thee, remember, thou are not shunted. Remember it is Christ that says, “Sit ye here.” Thy spot in the garden has also been consecrated. It has a special name. It is not “the place of wrestling,” nor “the place of watching,” but “the place of waiting.” There are lives that come into this world neither to do great work nor to bear great burdens, but simply to be; they are the neuter verbs. They are the flowers of the garden which have had no active mission. They have wreathed no chaplet; they have graced no table; they have escaped the eye of Peter and James and John. But they have gladdened the sight of Jesus. By their mere perfume, by their mere beauty, they have brought Him joy; by the very preservation of their loveliness in the valley they have lifted the Master’s heart.
