제 선조들의 하나님, 제가 주께 부르짖습니다.
주께서는 어느 시대든 선하고 지혜로운 이들의 피난처가 되어주셨습니다.
역사의 문이 열렸을 때, 주께서 맨 처음 인간의 마음에 빛을 밝히셨고,
주의 영이 맨 처음 야만적인 상태에 있던 그들을 사람이 되게 하셨습니다.
모든 세대 내내 당신이 우리의 주님이 되시어 생명을 주시고,
모든 지식의 근원이 되시고, 모든 선의 원천이 되셨습니다.
족장들이 주님을 신뢰하여 수치를 당하지 않았습니다.
선지자들이 주님을 찾으니 주께서 당신의 말씀을 그들의 입술에 두셨습니다.
시인들이 주님을 기다리니 그들이 성령으로 충만하게 되었습니다.
순교자들이 주님을 부르니 주께서 불꽃 가운데 그들과 함께 하셨습니다.
비천한 사람이 부르짖으니 주께서 들으시고 그를 곤경에서 구하여 내셨습니다.
어제도 계시고 오늘도 계시고 이제 다시 오실 주님,
제가 걷는 이 그리스도인의 길이 한 번도 가보지 않은 미지의 길이 아니라 성인들과 사도들과 선지자들과 순교자들의 발자국으로 잘 다져진 길인 것을 인하여 감사합니다.
제가 성경과 모든 역사와 세상의 위대한 문학을 연구할 때 주께서 제 인생의 모퉁이마다
이정표와 위험 경고 표시를 두신 것을 알게 하시니 감사합니다.
하지만 이 모든 것을 넘어 믿음의 선구자가 되신 주 예수 그리스도를 위대한 선물로 주신 은혜를 인하여 부족하나마 진실한 감사를 올려드립니다.
제가 주님의 이름을 아는 시대, 주님의 이름을 아는 땅에 태어나게 하심으로 유혹이나 시련을 당하지 않게 하신 주님을 찬양합니다.
성령님, 간구하오니 이 위대한 시대들에 관한 기억들에서 유익을 얻지 못하거나 저를 위해 예비하신 이 영광스런 유업에 참여하지 못하는 일이 없도록 도와주옵소서,
나의 주 예수 그리스도의 이름으로 기도드립니다. 아멘.
God of my forefathers, I cry unto You. You have been the refuge of good and wise men in every generation. When history began, You were the first enlightener of men's minds, and Your was the Spirit that first led them out of their brutish estate and made them men. Through all the ages You have been the Lord and giver of Life, the source of all knowledge, the fountain of all goodness.
The patriarchs trusted You and were not put to shame;
The prophets sought You and You did commit Your word to their lips;
The psalmist rejoiced in You and You were present in their song;
The apostles waited upon You and they were filled with Your Holy Spirit;
The martyrs called upon You and You were with them in the midst of the flame;
This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles.
You who wast, and art, and art to come, I thank You that this Christian way whereon I walk is no untried or uncharted road, but a road beaten hard by the footsteps of saints, apostles, prophets, and martyrs. I thank You for the finger-posts and danger-signals with which it is marked at every turning and which may be known to me through the study of the Bible, and of all history, and of all the great literature of the world. Beyond all I give You devout and humble thanks for the great gift of Jesus Christ, the Pioneer of our faith. I praise You that You have caused me to be born in an age and in a land which have known His name, and that I am not called upon to face any temptation or trial which He did not first endure.
Forbid it, Holy Lord, that I should fail to profit by these great memories of the ages that are gone by, or to enter into the glorious inheritance which You have prepared for me; through Jesus Christ my Lord. Amen.
나의 조상들의 하나님, 내가 주님께 부르짖습니다. 주님은 모든 세대를 통하여 선하고 지혜로운 사람들의 피난처가 되셨습니다. 역사가 시작된 이래로 주님은 인간의 마음에 빛을 비추신 처음 분이시고 당신의 영은 흙이 변하여 사람이 되게 하셨습니다. 당신은 세세토록 주님이시며 생명을 주시는 분이시며 모든 지식의 근원이며 모든 선의 원천이 되셨습니다.
족장들은 주님을 의지하여 부끄러움을 당하지 아니하였습니다.
선지자들이 주님을 찾으니 당신의 말씀을 그들의 입술에 맡기셨습니다.
시인들이 주님을 즐거워하니 주님은 그들의 노래에 임하셨습니다.
사도들이 주님을 기다리니 그들이 성령으로 충만하였습니다.
순교자들이 주님을 부르니 주께서는 불꽃 가운데서 그들과 함께하셨습니다.
이 곤고한 자가 부르짖으매 여호와께서 들으시고 그의 모든 환란에서 구원하셨도다.
전에도 계셨고 지금도 계시며 다시 오실 주님, 내가 걸어가는 길은 아무도 걷지 않은 미답의 길이 아니라 수많은 성도들과 사도들과 선지자들과 순교자들이 걸어간 길임을 감사드립니다. 성경의 연구를 통하여, 세계의 모든 역사와 위대한 문헌들을 통하여 갈림길마다 지시판과 위험신호를 보게 하심을 감사합니다. 무엇보다도 우리 믿음의 선구자인 위대하신 예수 그리스도의 선물로 인하여 경건과 겸손한 마음으로 감사를 드립니다. 주님은 이 시대에 나를 태어나게 하시고 주님의 이름을 아는 이 땅에서 나게 하시고 이미 주께서 견디신 시험으로 나를 불러 능히 견디게 하시니 감사합니다.
거룩하신 주여, 흘러간 세대들의 기억 속에서 교훈을 얻지 못하는 실수를 하지 말게 하시고, 당신께서 나를 위해 준비하신 영광스러운 기업으로 들어가는 일에 실패하지 말게 하소서. 나의 주 예수 그리스도의 이름으로 기도합니다. 아멘.
