18장 은혜와 구원의 확신에 대하여
- 비록 위선자들과 다른 거듭나지 못한 사람들은 하나님의 총애를 받아 구원의 상태에 있다는 거짓된 소망과 인간적인 추정으로 헛되이 스스로 속이기도 하지만1) (그들의 그러한 소망은 사라질 것이다),2) 주 예수를 진실로 믿고, 신실하게 그분을 사랑하고, 그분 앞에서 모든 선한 양심으로 살아가고자 노력하는 그런 사람은 자기가 은혜의 상태에 있다는 것을 이생에서 분명하게 확신하기도 하고,3) 하나님의 영광에 대한 소망 안에서 즐거워하기도 하는데, 이러한 소망은 결코 자기를 부끄럽게 하지 않을 것이다.4)
Although hypocrites and other unregenerate men may vainly deceive themselves with false hopes and carnal presumptions of being in the favor of God, and estate of salvation[1] (which hope of theirs shall perish):[2] yet such as truly believe in the Lord Jesus, and love Him in sincerity, endeavouring to walk in all good conscience before Him, may, in this life, be certainly assured that they are in the state of grace,[3] and may rejoice in the hope of the glory of God, which hope shall never make them ashamed.[4]
- 이 확신은 불확실한 소망에 근거한 추측과 가능성 뿐인 신념이 아니다.5) 다만 믿음의 절대적인 확신은 구원의 약속들에 대한 거룩한 진리에 기초하며,6) 그 약속들로 주신 은혜의 내적 증거,7) 우리가 하나님의 자녀인 것을 우리의 영과 더불어 입증하시는 양자의 영의 증거에 기초한다.8) 이 성령은 우리가 받을 기업의 보증이신데, 그분에 의하여 우리가 구속의 날까지 인치심을 받았다.9)
This certainty is not a bare conjectural and probable persuasion grounded upon a fallible hope;[5] but an infallible assurance of faith founded upon the divine truth of the promises of salvation,[6] the inward evidence of those graces unto which these promises are made,[7] the testimony of the Spirit of adoption witnessing with our spirits that we are the children of God,[8] which Spirit is the earnest of our inheritance, whereby we are sealed to the day of redemption.[9]
- 이 절대적인 확신은 믿음의 본질에 속할 정도는 아니라서, 참된 신자라도 확신에 참여하기까지 오래 기다리고 많은 어려움과 싸우기도 한다.10) 그러나 그는 하나님께서 자기에게 값없이 주시는 것들을 성령으로 알게 되어, 비상한 계시 없이도 일상적인 수단을 적절하게 사용하여 확신에 이를 수 있다.11) 그러므로 자기의 부르심과 택하심을 확인하려고 최대한 힘쓰는 것은 모든 사람의 의무이다.12) 그것에 의하여 성령 안에서 평안과 기쁨으로, 하나님께 대한 사랑과 감사로, 순종의 의무에서 강함과 활기참으로 자기 마음을 넓혀야 한다.13) 이 확신은 조금도 사람들을 방종에 기울게 하지 않고, 이렇게 합당한 열매들을 맺는다.14)
This infallible assurance does not so belong to the essence of faith, but that a true believer may wait long, and conflict with many difficulties, before he be partaker of it:[10] yet, being enabled by the Spirit to know the things which are freely given him of God, he may, without extraordinary revelation in the right use of ordinary means, attain thereunto.[11] And therefore it is the duty of every one to give all diligence to make his calling and election sure,[12] that thereby his heart may be enlarged in peace and joy in the Holy Ghost, in love and thankfulness to God, and in strength and cheerfulness in the duties of obedience,[13] the proper fruits of this assurance; so far is it from inclining men to looseness.[14]
- 참된 신자들도 자기의 구원에 대한 확신이 여러 방식으로 흔들리거나, 감소되거나, 중단될 수 있다. 그런 일은 확신을 지키는 일에 태만하거나, 양심을 해하고 성령을 근심케 하는 어떤 특별한 죄에 빠지거나, 어떤 뜻밖의 격렬한 유혹에 의하거나, 하나님께서 자기의 얼굴 빛을 거두시거나, 하나님께서 자기를 경외하는 사람에게조차 흑암 중에 걷고 빛이 없도록 내버려 두셔서 일어난다.15) 그러나 그들은 결코 하나님의 씨, 믿음의 생명, 그리스도와 형제들에 대한 사랑, 마음의 신실함, 의무의 양심이 완전히 없어지지 않는다. 그렇기 때문에 성령의 활동에 의하여 이 확신은 적당한 때에 되살아난다.16) 그리고 그 동안에도 그들은 극한 절망으로부터 보호를 받는다.17)
True believers may have the assurance of their salvation divers ways shaken, diminished, and intermitted; as, by negligence in preserving of it, by falling into some special sin which wounds the conscience and grieves the Spirit; by some sudden or vehement temptation, by God's withdrawing the light of His countenance, and suffering even such as fear Him to walk in darkness and to have no light:[15] yet are they never so utterly destitute of that seed of God, and life of faith, that love of Christ and the brethren, that sincerity of heart, and conscience of duty, out of which, by the operation of the Spirit, this assurance may, in due time, be revived;[16] and by the which, in the mean time, they are supported from utter despair.[17]
