"Continue in prayer" (Colossians 4: 2).

It is interesting to notice how large a portion of the Word is occupied with the subject of prayer.  We scarcely open the Bible before we read, "Then began men to call upon the name of the Lord" (Genesis 4: 26); and just as we are about to close the volume, the "Amen" of an earnest supplication meets our ear.  Instances are plentiful.  Here we find a wrestling Jacob--there a Daniel who prayed three times a day--and a David who with all his heart called on his God.  On the mountain we see Elias; in the dungeon Paul and Silas.  We have multitudes of commands and myriads of promises.  What does this teach us, but the sacred importance and necessity of prayer?  We may be certain that whatever God has made prominent in His Word, He intended to be conspicuous in our lives.  If He has said much about prayer, it is because He knows we have much need of it.  So deep are our necessities that until we are in heaven we must not cease to pray.  A prayerless sould is a Christless soul.  If you are a child of God, you will seek your Father's face and live in your Father's love.  Pray that this year you may be holy, humble, zealous, and patient.  Pray for a closer communion with Christ.  Enter into His banqueting-house of love more often.  Pray that you may be an example and a blessing to others and that you may live more to the glory of your Master.

제목 : 기도를 힘쓰라

요절 : "기도를 항상 힘쓰고 기도에 감사함으로 깨어 있으라"(골4:2)

성경(말씀)의 얼마나 많은 부분이 기도의 주제로 채워져 있는가를 인식하는 것은 흥미있는 일입니다. 우리는 성경을 펴면 "셋도 아들을 낳고 그 이름을 에노스라 하였으며 그때에 사람들이 비로소 여호와의 이름을 불렀더라"(창4:26)라는 말씀을 읽게 됩니다.

그리고 그 책(창세기)을 덮으려고 할 때 진지한 '아 멘'의 기도의 간구가 우리의 귓전을 울립니다. 진지한 기도의 실례들은(성경에서)많이 볼 수 있습니다. 

천사와 씨름한 야곱과(역자주1)  하루 세 번씩 기도한 다니엘(역자주2)과 전심으로 주님에게 간구한 다윗등(역자주3)  

갈멜산 위에서는 불의 선지자 엘리야의 간절한 기도를 보고(역자주4) 

빌립보 깊은 감옥에서는 바울과 실라의 찬미와 기도소리를 듣습니다.(역자주5)

성경엔 기도하라는 많은 명령(당부)과 약속들이 있습니다. 이것은 신성한 기도의 중요성과 필요성 외에 우리에게 무엇을 가르치겠습니까?  하나님이 그의 말씀(성경)에서 눈에 띄게 강조하신 것은 무엇이나 하나님께서 우리의 삶 속에서 명백히 이루어 주실 뜻이 계심을 믿어도 좋습니다. 

만일 하나님이 기도에 관하여 많이 말씀하셨다면 그것은 하나님이(우리에게) 기도의 필요성이 그만큼 크다는 것을 아시기 때문입니다. 우리의 기도의 필요성이 너무 절실(切實)하기 때문에 하늘나라에 들어가기까지 우리는 기도를 그쳐서는 안됩니다. 기도없는 영혼은 그리스도 없는 영혼입니다. 그대가 하나님의 아들이라면, 그대는 하나님의 얼굴을 찾아서 뵙고 하나님 아버지의 사랑 안에 살 것입니다. 올해 그대는 거룩하고, 겸손하고, 열성적이고, 인내성 있는 그리스도인이 되기 위하여 기도하십시요. 예수 그리스도와 더 가까운 친교를 위하여 기도하십시요.  자주 주님의 사랑의 연회장으로 들어 가십시요(역자주6) 그대는 다른 이에게 본이 되고 축복이 되고, 더욱 그대의 주님의 영광을 위해 살기 위하여 기도하십시요.
