2월 16일 스펄전 아침묵상 “어떠한 형편에든지 내가 자족하기를 배웠노니” [빌립보서 4장 11절]

"I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content" (Philippians 4: 11).

Philippians 4: 11 shows us that contentment is not a natural inclination of man.  Covetousness, discontent, and murmuring are as natural to man as thorn as are to the soil.  The precious things of the eart must be cultivated.  If we would have wheat, we must plow and sow.  If we want flowers, there must be the garden and all the gardener's care.  Contentment is one of the flowers of heaven.  If we want it, it must be cultivated.  It will not grow in us by nature.  It is the new nature alone that can produce it, and even then we must be especially careful and watchful that we maintain and cultivate the grace which God has shown in us.  Paul says, "I have learned. . .to be content;" as much as to say, he did not know how at one time.  It cost him some pains to attain to the mystery of that great truth.  No doubt he sometimes thought he had learned, and then broke down.  And when at last he had attained it and could say, "I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content," he was and old, gray-headed man, upon the borders of the grave--a poor prisoner shut up in Nero's dungeon at Rome.  Do not indulge the notion that you can be contented without learning, or learn without discipline.  It is not a power that may be exercised naturally, but a science to be acquired gradually.  We know this from experience.  Hush that murmur, natural thought it be, and continue as a diligent pupil in the Word.

"어떤 형편에든지 내가 자족(自足)하기를 배웠노니" (빌 4: 11).

빌립보서 4: 11은 만족이 인간의 자연스러운 성향이 아니라는 것을 보여줍니다.  탐욕, 불만, 그리고 불평은 인간에게 땅에 가시나무가 나는 것처럼 자연스러운 것입니다.  땅의 소중한 것은 반드시 배양되어야 합니다.  밀을 얻고자 한다면 밭을 갈고 씨를 뿌려야 합니다.  꽃을 원한다면 정원과 정원사의 수고가 있어야 합니다.  만족은 하늘나라의 꽃 가운데 하나입니다.  우리가 이 꽃을 원한다면 그것은 길러져야만 합니다.  이 꽃은 우리 안에서 저절로 자라지는 않을 것입니다.  이 꽃을 생산할 수 있는 것은 새로운 본성뿐이며, 새로운 본성이 있더라도 우리는 하나님이 우리 안에 씨뿌려주신 은혜를 유지하고 배양하기 위해 특별히 마음을 쓰고 조심을 해야합니다.  바울은 한때 만족하는 법을 알지 못했다고나 말하려는 듯 "자족하기를 배웠노니"라고 말했습니다.  그 위대한 진리의 신비에 도달하기까지 그는 상당한 고통의 대가를 치러야 했습니다.  분명히 그는 때때로 자족하기를 배웠다고 생각했지만, 그런 다음에 또 실패했습니다.  그리고 마침내 그것을 얻고 "어떤 형편에든지 내가 자족하기를 배웠노니"라고 말할 수 있었을 때 바울은 무덤가에 이른 늙고 머리가 하얀 노인--로마 네로의 동굴 감옥에 갇힌 가련한 죄수--이 되어 있었습니다.  그대가 배우지 않고도 만족할 수 있다거나 디스플린(훈련) 없이 배울 수 있다는 생각을 품지 마십시오.  그것은 자연스럽게 발휘될 수 있는 힘이 아니라 점진적으로 습득되어야 하는 기술입니다.  이것을 우리는 경험으로부터 압니다.  비록 자연스러운 것이지만 불평을 멈추고 말씀 안에서 부지런한 학생으로 계속 사십시오.
