"Show me wherefore thou contendest with me" (Job 10: 2).

There are some of your graces which would never be discovered if it were not for your trials.  Love is too often like a glow-worm showing little light except in the midst of surrounding darkness.  Hope itself is like a star--not to be seen in the sunshine of prosperity and only to be discovered in the night of adversity.  Afflictions are often the black foils in which God sets the jewels of His children's graces to make them shine the better.  How can you know that you have faith until your faith is exercised?  God often allows our trials that our graces may be discovered.  Besides, it is not merely discovery; real growth in grace is the result of sanctified trials.  God often removes our comforts and our privileges in order to make us better Christians.  He trains His soldiers, not in tents of ease and luxury, but by turning them out and using them to forced marches and hard service.  He has them ford through streams, swim through rivers, climb mountains, and walk many a long mile with heavy knapsacks on their backs.  Could this account for the troubles which you are experiencing?  Is the Lord bringing out your graces and making them grow?  Is this the reason He is contending with you?

"무슨 연고로 나로 더불어 쟁론하시는지 나로 알게 하옵소서" (욥 10: 2).

그대가 받는 은혜 가운데 어떤 것은 시련을 겪지 않으면 절대로 드러나지 않습니다.  사랑은 주위가 어둡지 않으면 빛을 거의 보이지 않는 반딧불과 같을 때가 아주 많습니다.  소망 그 자체는 별과 같습니다.  번영의 햇빛 속에서는 보이지 않고 역경의 밤에만 발견됩니다.  고난은 종종 하나님께서 그의 자녀들에게 주시는 은혜의 보석이 빛을 더 발하게 하려고 그 안에 놓는 검은 박(箔)이 됩니다.  그대의 믿음이 활용되기 전까지 그대에게 믿음이 있다는 것을 어떻게 알겠습니까?  하나님은 종종 우리의 은혜가 발견되게 하려고 시련을 허락하십니다.  더하여 이것은 단순히 발견이 아닙니다.  은혜 속에서 참으로 성장하는 것이 거룩한 시련의 결과입니다.  하나님은 종종 우리를 더 나은 기독교인으로 만들고자 우리의 편안함과 특권을 제거하십니다.  그분은 자신의 병사들을 안일과 사치의 천막 안에서가 아니라 그들을 밖으로 몰아내어 강제로 행군시키고 어려운 임무를 맡김으로써 훈련시키십니다.  하나님은 그들로 하여금 물을 건너고 강을 헤엄치고 산을 오르고 무거운 배낭을 등에 메고 멀리 걷게 합니다.  이것이 그대가 겪고 있는 고난에 대한 설명이 될 수 있을까요?  주님께서 그대의 은혜를 드러내고 그것들을 더 크게 하고 계십니까?  이것이 하나님이 그대와 쟁론하는 이유입니까?
