"But who may abide the day of his coming?" (Malachi 3: 2).
His first coming was without external pomp or show of power. Yet, in truth, there were few who could abide its testing might. Herod and all Jerusalem were stirred at the news of the wondrous birth. Those who supposed themselves to be waiting for Him showed the fallacy of their professions by rejecting Him when He came. But what will His second advent be? What sinner can endure to think of it? "He shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked" (Isaiah 11: 4). When, in His humiliation, His only words to the soldiers were, "I am He," they fell backward. What will be the terror of His enemies when He more fully reveals Himself as the "I Am"? His death shook earth and darkened heaven. What will be the dreadful splendor of that day in which, as the living Savior, He summons the living and dead before Him? Oh, that the terrors of the Lord would persuade men to forsake their sins! Though a Lamb, He is still the Lion of the tribe of Judah, rending the prey in pieces. Although He does not break the bruised reed, yet will He break His enemies with a rod of iron and dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel. But His beloved blood-washed people look for His appearing with joy and hope to witness it without fear. Let us search ourselves this morning and make out calling and election sure, so that the coming of the Lord may cause no dark forebodings in our mind. Oh, for grace to cast away all hypocrisy and to be found sincere without rebuke in the day of His appearing!

요절 : "그의 임하는 날을 누가 능히 당하며 그의 나타나는 때에 누가 능히 서리요 그는 금을 연단하는 자의 불과 표백하는 자의 잿물과 같은 것이라."(말3:2)
그리스도께서 첫 번째 강림하실 때(베들레헴의 탄생)는 외부적인 장관(壯觀)이나 큰 능력을 보임이 없이 조용히 아기 예수님으로 탄생하셨습니다. 그러나 사실 그 능력의 시금석(試金石, 시험하는 능력)을 감당할 수 있는 사람은 거의 없었습니다.
헤롯왕과 온 예루살렘은 예수님의 놀라운 탄생의 소식을 듣고 떠들석 했습니다. 자신들을 그리스도를 기다리는 사람들로 생각했던 사람들은 그가 오셨을 때 그를 거절함으로써 그들의 고백이 허위(오류)임을 보였습니다.(즉 능력의 시금석에 의하여 가짜임이 판명되었습니다.) 그런데 예수님의 재림 때에는 어떨 것입니까? 어떤 죄인이 감히 그것을 생각조차 할 수 있겠습니까?
"그는 그 입의 막대기로 세상을 치며 입술의 기운으로 악인을 죽이실 것입니다."(사11:4)
주님께서(겟세마네 동산에서) 굴욕을 당하실 때에(그를 잡으러 온), 군인들에게 "내가 그니라"라고 하신 주님의 한 말씀에 그들은 모두 뒤로 넘어졌습니다.(역자주1) 그렇다면 "내로라"(요18:5)고 하시며 그 자신을 완전하게 계시하실 때(나타내실 때) 주님의 원수들의 두려움이 얼마나 클 것입니까?(겟세마네 동산에서 넘어졌던 상황과는 엄청나게 다를 것입니다.) 골고다에서의 주님의 죽음은 땅을 흔들었고, 하늘을 캄캄하게(어둡게)했습니다.(역자주2)
살아 계신 구세주로서, 주님이 산자와 죽은 자들을 그 앞에 부르시는 날의 그 두려운 광채는 얼마나 장엄하겠습니까? 오, 주님의 심판의 공포(두려움)가 사람들로 하여금 그들의 죄를 버리게 하기를 원합니다! 예수님은 비록 어린양이시지만, 그는 여전히 먹이를 산산조각 찢어내는 유다지파의 사자입니다. 비록 주님은 상한갈대를 꺾지 않으시지만(역자주3) 철장(철 막대기)으로 그의 원수들을 깨뜨릴 것이며. 또 그들을 내던져 토기장이의 그릇처럼 산산조각 내실 것입니다.(역자주4) 그러나 그의 피로 씻음 받은 백성들은 기쁨으로 그의 나타나심을 열망합니다.(고대합니다.) 그리고 두려움 없이 그것을 목격하기를 소망합니다.(역자주5)
오늘 아침 우리 자신을 살펴보고 우리의 부르심과 택하심을 확실하게 합시다. 그래서 주님의 재림이 우리 마음속에 어두운 예감(불길한 예감)을 일으키지 않도록 합시다. 오 주님, 모든 위선(거짓)을 물리칠 은혜를 주시옵소서 그리고 주님이 나타나시는 날에 나무랄 데 없는 진실한 자로 주님께 발견되게 하시옵소서.
