제21조. 그리스도의 속죄
우리는 예수 그리스도가 멜기세덱의 반차를 따라 맹세로 확증되신 영원한 대제사장이신 것을 믿으며(히 7:1,17,21), 또한 그는 선지자들이 미리 예언한 바와 같이 우리 죄를 깨끗이 씻기 위하여 친히 십자가 나무에 달려 자신을 드리고 그의 보배로운 피를 쏟으심으로 그의 완전한 속상(속죄, 배상)으로 성부의 진노를 진정시키기 위하여 우리를 대신하여 자신을 성부 앞에 드리신 것을 믿습니다(벧전 2:24). 성경에 기록된 대로, 하나님의 아들에게 임한 징계를 인하여 우리는 평화를 누리게 되었으며, 그가 채찍에 맞음으로 우리는 나음을 입었습니다(사 53:5). 그는 마치 도수장으로 끌려가는 어린양과 같았으며(사 53:7), 그는 범죄자 중 하나로 헤아림을 받으셨으니(사 53:12), 비록 본디오 빌라도는 처음에 그를 무죄로 선언하였지만, 결국 빌라도에 의해 범죄자로 정죄를 받았습니다. 그는 취하지 아니한 것도 물어주게 되었습니다(시 69:4). 그는 의인으로서 불의한 자를 대신하여 죽으셨으며(벧전 3:18), 우리의 죄악을 인하여 몸과 영혼에 끔찍한 형벌을 받아 고통을 겪으셨고, 그의 땀은 땅에 떨어지는 핏방울같이 되었습니다(눅 22:44). 그는 “나의 하나님, 나의 하나님, 어찌하여 나를 버리셨나이까?”(마 27:46)라고 부르짖었습니다. 그는 이 모든 것을 우리의 죄 사함을 위하여 참으셨습니다.

그러므로 우리는 사도 바울과 함께 “그리스도와 그가 십자가에 못 박히신 것 외에는 아무 것도 알지 아니하기로 작정하였음이라”(고전 2:2)고 말하는 것이 마땅합니다. 우리는 우리 주 그리스도 예수를 아는 지식이 가장 고상함을 인하여 모든 것을 해로 여깁니다(빌 3:8). 우리는 그의 상처에서 모든 위로를 발견하기에, “거룩하게 된 자들을 영원히 온전하게”(히 10:14) 하신 (그리스도의) 이 유일한 단번의 제사 외에 하나님과 화목하게 할 다른 어떤 방법을 찾거나 고안할 필요가 없습니다. 바로 이것이 하나님의 천사가 그를 ‘예수’ 곧 구주(Saviour)라고 부른 이유이니 이는 “그가 자기 백성을 저희 죄에서 구원할 자”이기(마 1:21) 때문입니다.

Article 21: Of the satisfaction of Christ, our only High Priest, for us.
We believe that Jesus Christ is ordained with an oath to be an everlasting High Priest, after the order of Melchisedec; and that he hath presented himself in our behalf before the Father, to appease his wrath by his full satisfaction, by offering himself on the tree of the cross, and pouring out his precious blood to purge away our sins; as the prophets had foretold. For it is written: He was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him, and with his stripes we are healed. He was brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and numbered with the transgressors, and condemned by Pontius Pilate as a malefactor, though he had first declared him innocent. Therefore: he restored that which he took not away, and suffered, the just for the unjust, as well in his body as in his soul, feeling the terrible punishment which our sins had merited; insomuch that his sweat became like unto drops of blood falling on the ground. He called out, my God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? and hath suffered all this for the remission of our sins. Wherefore we justly say with the apostle Paul: that we know nothing, but Jesus Christ, and him crucified; we count all things but loss and dung for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus our Lord, in whose wounds we find all manner of consolation. Neither is it necessary to seek or invent any other means of being reconciled to God, than this only sacrifice, once offered, by which believers are made perfect forever. This is also the reason why he was called by the angel of God, Jesus, that is to say, Savior, because he should save his people from their sins.

제 21 조 우리의 대제사장이신 그리스도의 속죄

우리는, 예수 그리스도께서 멜기세덱의 반차를 좇아 영원한 대제사장으로 엄숙히 기름부음을 받으셨음을 믿으며, 또한 우리를 위해 자신을 십자가에 드림으로 아버지를 기쁘게 하여 그 진노를 없이 하셨고, 앞서 선지자들이 예언했던 것처럼 우리의 죄를 씻어 주시기 위하여 보혈을 흘려주셨음을 믿습니다.

선지자들은 다음과 같이 기록합니다. “그가 징계를 받음으로 우리가 흠 없이 되었고, 그가 채찍에 맞음으로 우리가 나음을 입었도다 그는 도수장으로 끌려가는 어린 양과 같았도다. 그는 범죄자 중 하나로 헤아림을 입었음이라(사53:5,7,12).” 그리고 비록 본디오 빌라도(Pontius Pilate)가 처음에는 그분을 무죄하다고 선언했으나, 나중에는 본디오 빌라도에 의해서 범죄자로 정죄 받으셨습니다. 그분은 취하지 아니한 것도 물어주게 되었습니다(시69:4). 그분은 불의한 자를 대신하여 의인으로서 죽으셨습니다(벧전3:18). 그분은 몸과 영혼이 고난 당하셨고, 우리의 죄로 말미암아 무서운 심판을 느끼셔야 했고, 그분의 땀은 땅에 떨어지는 피 방울 같이 되었습니다(눅22:44). 마지막으로, 그분은 외치시기를 “나의 하나님, 나의 하나님 어찌하여 나를 버리셨나이까?”(마27:46)라고 탄식하셨습니다. 그분은 이 모든 것을 우리의 죄를 사하기 위해서 견디셨습니다.

그러므로 우리가 바울과 함께 예수 그리스도와 그의 십자가에 못 박히신 것 외에는 아무것도 알지 못한다(고전2:2)고 말하는 것은 옳은 일입니다. 우리는 우리 주 예수 그리스도를 아는 지식이 가장 고상함을 인하여 모든 것을 해로 여깁니다(빌3:8). 우리는 그분의 상처에서 온갖 모양의 위로를 얻습니다. 신자를 언제나 완전케 하는, 이 단번에 드려진 한 번의 속죄 제사(히10:14) 외에 하나님과 화해할 다른 방편을 찾거나 만들려고 할 필요가 없습니다. 이것이 또한 하나님의 천사가 그분을 “예수”라고 부른 이유이기도 합니다. 왜냐하면 “그분이 자기 백성을 저희 죄에서 구원할 자”이시기 때문입니다(마1:21).
Article 21: The Atonement
We believe
that Jesus Christ is a high priest forever
according to the order of Melchizedek—

made such by an oath—

and that he presented himself
in our name
before his Father,
to appease his Father’s wrath
with full satisfaction

by offering himself

on the tree of the cross

and pouring out his precious blood

for the cleansing of our sins,
as the prophets had predicted.

For it is written
that “the punishment that made us whole”
was placed on the Son of God
and that “by his bruises we are healed.”
He was “like a lamb that is led to the slaughter”;
he was “numbered with the transgressors”46
and condemned as a criminal by Pontius Pilate,

though Pilate had declared
that he was innocent.

So he paid back
what he had not stolen,47
and he suffered—

“the righteous for the unrighteous,”48
in both his body and his soul—

in such a way that
when he sensed the horrible punishment
required by our sins
“his sweat became like great drops of blood
falling down on the ground.”49
He cried, “My God, my God,
why have you forsaken me?”50

And he endured all this
for the forgiveness of our sins.

Therefore we rightly say with Paul that
we know nothing “except Jesus Christ, and him crucified”;51
we “regard everything as loss
because of the surpassing value
of knowing Christ Jesus [our] Lord.”52
We find all comforts in his wounds
and have no need to seek or invent any other means
to reconcile ourselves with God
than this one and only sacrifice,
once made,
which renders believers perfect
forever.

This is also why
the angel of God called him Jesus—
that is, “Savior”—

because he would save his people
from their sins.53
