2월 10일 로마서 12:19 내 사랑하는 자들아 너희가 친히 원수를 갚지 말고 하나님의 진노하심에 맡기라 기록되었으되 원수 갚는 것이 내게 있으니 내가 갚으리라고 주께서 말씀하시니라
무엇을 하는 것보다 무엇을 하지 않는 것이 오히려 더 힘들고 고통스러울 때 가 있습니다. 평정을 유지한다는 것은 힘이 있다는 훌륭한 증거입니다. 그토록 사악하고 치명적인 고발에도 예수께서는 깊고 흔들림 없는 침묵으로 대응하셨습니다. 침묵이 하도 깊어서 고발한 자들과 구경꾼들이 두려워 떨었습니 다. 세상에서 가장 가슴 약한 사람조차 의분을 느낄 만큼 지독한 모욕과 폭력과 조롱에도 예수께서는 말씀 한 마디 없이 확신에 찬 침묵으로 일관하셨습니다. 부당하게 비난받고 까닭 없이 학대당하는 이들은 원수 갚는 일을 하나님께 맡기며 침묵하기가 얼마나 힘들고 고통스러운지 잘 압니다.
사람들이 그대의 의도 그릇 판단하고
까닭이 있어 비난한다 생각하며,
그대의 잘못이라고 말하리라.
흔들리지 말고 그대의 고요한 길 가라.
그리스도께서 심판자이시되 저들은 아니니
두려워 말라, 담대하라.
사도 바울은 말했습니다. "이 어느 것도 나를 흔들지 못하리라" (행 20:24, KJV). 그는 “이 어느 것도 나를 슬프게 하지 못하리라"라고 말하지 않았습니다. 슬프다는 것과 흔들린다는 것은 차원이 다른 이야기입니다. 바울은 심성이 여린 사람이었습니다. 성경을 봐도 알겠지만 바울처럼 울었다는 기록이 다른 사도에게는 없습니다. 강하지 않고서는 함부로 울 수가 없습니다. "예수께서 눈물을 흘리시더라" (요 11:35). 예수님은 세상에서 가장 강한 분이셨습니다.
그러니 심성 여린 바울로서야 "이 어느 것도 나를 슬프게 하지 못하리라"는 말을 할 수 없었을 것입니다. 그 대신 그는 자신이 옳다고 믿는 자리에서 흔들리지 않기로 결심했습니다. 그는 우리가 흔히 가치 있다 여기는 것들을 버렸습니다. 쉬운 길을 바라지 않았고 목숨마저 아깝게 여기지 않았습니다. 단 하나, 그리스도를 향한 헌신에만 온 마음을 쏟았습니다. 그리스도의 미소를 얻기 위해서였습니다. 그리스도의 일을 행함은 지상에서 받는 상급이요 영광이라는 인식에 바울만큼 투철한 사람이 없었습니다. 그렇게 일하고 얻는 그리스도의 미소는 천국이었습니다.

Strong Composure
Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves — Rom 12:19
There are seasons when to be still demands immeasurably higher strength than to act. Composure is often the highest result of power. To the vilest and most deadly charges Jesus responded with deep, unbroken silence, such as excited the wonder of the judge and the spectators. To the grossest insults, the most violent ill-treatment and mockery that might well bring indignation into the feeblest heart, He responded with voiceless complacent calmness. Those who are unjustly accused, and causelessly ill-treated know what tremendous strength is necessary to keep silence to God.
“Men may misjudge thy aim,
Think they have cause to blame,
Say, thou art wrong;
Keep on thy quiet way,
Christ is the Judge, not they,
Fear not, be strong.”
St. Paul said, “None of these things move me.”
He did not say, none of these things hurt me. It is one thing to be hurt, and quite another to be moved. St. Paul had a very tender heart. We do not read of any apostle who cried as St. Paul did. It takes a strong man to cry. Jesus wept, and He was the manliest Man that ever lived. So it does not say, none of these things hurt me. But the apostle had determined not to move from what he believed was right. He did not count as we are apt to count; he did not care for ease; he did not care for this mortal life. He cared for only one thing, and that was to be loyal to Christ, to have His smile. To St. Paul, more than to any other man, His work was wages, His smile was Heaven. —Margaret Bottome
