우리의 신앙 체험에는 세 단계의 믿음이 있습니다. 첫째는 어떤 증표를 보거나 강력한 감정에 사로잡힐 때만 믿는 것입니다. 기드온처럼 우리도 양털을 만져 보고 그것이 젖어 있으면 기꺼이 하나님을 믿습니다. 참된 믿음일 수 있지만 불완전합니다. 이러한 믿음은 하나님의 말씀 대신에 느낌이나 뭔가 다른 증표를 향해 끊임없이 고개를 돌립니다. 하지만 우리는 감정에 의지하지 않고 하나님을 믿을 때 성숙으로 크게 도약했습니다. 어떠한 감정 체험 없이 믿을 때가 더 복됩니다. 우리의 감정이 승할 때 믿는 것을 첫 단계라고 한다면, 믿음의 두 번째 단계는 모든 감정이 사라졌을 때 믿는 것입니다. 그리고 세 번째 단계는 이 둘을 완전히 초월합니다. 환경, 감정, 상황, 인간의 논리 등의 모든 것이 우리를 반대 방향으로 몰아가는 듯 보일 때조차 하나님과 그분의 말씀을 믿는 것이 믿음이므로, 더욱 그렇습니다. 바울이 바로 이러한 단계의 믿음을 보여주었습니다. "여러 날 동안 해도 별도 보이지 아니하고 큰 풍랑이 그대로 있으매 구원의 여망마저 없어졌더라"(행 27:20). 하지만 이러한 상황에서도 그가 하는 말을 보십시오. "여러분이여 안심하라. 나는 내게 말씀하신 그대로 되리라고 하나님을 믿노라" (행 27:25). 다른 모든 증표가 반대 방향을 가리켜도 온전히 그분의 말씀에 의지하는 믿음을 주시기를 빕니다.
믿을 때 언제인가?
모든 것이 끝나.
승리의 종려나무 흔들리고
삶이 기쁨과 찬양 넘치는
아름다운 시편일 때?
아니라! 믿을 때는
파도 높이 몰아치고
폭풍 구름 하늘을 채워서
우리의 기도 길고 긴 외침일 그때라,
"오, 살리소서!”
믿을 때 언제인가?
친구들 참되고,
안락이 제 발로 찾아오니,
무슨 말, 무슨 일을 해도
듣느니 찬양뿐일 때?
아니라! 믿을 때는
혼자서 있을 그때,
여름새 날아가고
의지 가지 다 떨어져 나가
하나님만 남았을 그때라.
믿을 때 언제인가?
조금 더 먼 후일,
이길 저길 다 다녀 보고,
쓰라린 후회의 눈물로
믿고 기도하는 법 알게 될 때?
아니라! 믿을 때는
이 급박한 순간이니
꺾여 버린 상한 갈대여!
가련하고 힘든 영혼아, 어서 달려가
네 하나님 믿으라.
믿을 때 언제인가?
희망 드높고,
하늘에 햇빛 찬란하여
환희와 기쁨
온 가슴을 채울 때?
아니라! 믿을 때는
우리의 기쁨 사라지고
슬픔으로 고개 꺾일 때,
모든 것이 싸늘히 죽어
하나님만 남았을 그때라.

Degrees of Faith
Let me prove, I pray thee, but this once with the fleece — Judg 6:39
There are degrees to faith. At one stage of Christian experience we cannot believe unless we have some sign or some great manifestation of feeling. We feel our fleece, like Gideon, and if it is wet we are willing to trust God. This may be true faith, but it is imperfect. It always looks for feeling or some token besides the Word of God. It marks quite an advance in faith when we trust God without feelings. It is blessed to believe without having any emotion.
There is a third stage of faith which even transcends that of Gideon and his fleece. The first phase of faith believes when there are favorable emotions, the second believes when there is the absence of feeling, but this third form of faith believes God and His Word when circumstances, emotions, appearances, people, and human reason all urge to the contrary. Paul exercised this faith in Acts 27:20, 25, “And when neither sun nor stars in many days appeared, and no small tempest lay on us, all hope that we should be saved was then taken away.” Notwithstanding all this Paul said, “Wherefore, sirs, be of good cheer; for I believe God, that it shall be even as it was told me.”
May God give us faith to fully trust His Word though everything else witness the other way. — C. H. P.

All else but God.
What is the time to trust?
Is it some future day,

And learned to trust and pray
By bitter woe?
Nay! but the time to trust
Is in this moment’s need,
Poor, broken, bruised reed!
Poor, troubled soul, make speed
To trust thy God.
What is the time to trust?
Is it when hopes beat high,
When sunshine gilds the sky,
And joy and ecstasy
Fill all the heart?
Nay! but the time to trust
Is when our joy is fled,
When sorrow bows the head,
And all is cold and dead,
All else but God.
