10월 27일 시편 42:7 주의 폭포 소리에 깊은 바다가 서로 부르며 주의 모든 파도와 물결이 나를 휩쓸었나이다
우리에게 덮쳐, 숨 막히는 물보라와
흰 포말로 그분의 얼굴 못 보게 하거나,
우리 앞에 잔잔히 빛나는 길 펼쳐, 하늘의 집까지
우리 무사히 데려가거나, 그분의 파도입니다.
우리의 위로되시어 파도 건너시며
우리의 두려움 가라앉히시거나,
우리의 외침에 도움도 대답도 없고
외로운 침묵뿐 누구 하나 없어도, 그분의 파도입니다.
폭풍에 밀려 끝없이 요동하는 파도,
저희끼리 외쳐 부르는 그 깊은 바다.
우리가 죽도록 헤쳐 나가거나, 그 큰 물결
그분의 말씀에 침묵하거나, 그분의 파도입니다.
그분 물결 가르사, 우리로 저 바다.
밑바닥의 마른 땅 걷게 하시거나,
그 소요의 파도 우리 위로 넘쳐, 하나뿐인
우리의 길 무자비하게 막히거나, 그분의 파도입니다.
그분의 파도이니, 그 파도 뚫고 우리 인도하십니다.
그렇게 약속하셨고, 그분의 사랑이 그렇게 행하십니다.
지키시고 이끄시며, 인도하시고 받쳐 주시며,
당신의 틀림없는 항구로 우리 끝까지 인도하십니다.

여러분의 주님께서 여러분을 세워 두신 그 자리에 든든히 서서 최선을 다하십시오. 하나님께서는 우리에게 시련이나 시험을 보내시며, 붙들고 씨름해야 할 상대로 우리 앞에 삶을 두십니다. 우리가 이처럼 진지한 투쟁을 통해 강해 지기를 그분께서 기대하십니다. 맹렬한 바람에 가지가 뒤틀리고 거의 부러질 듯 줄기가 휘는 곳에 서 있는 나무는, 계곡의 안온한 곳에서 자라는 나무보다 뿌리가 깊습니다.
우리의 삶도 그렇습니다. 강하고 위대한 성품은 역경을 통해서 자랍니다.

His Billows
All thy waves and thy billows are gone over me — Ps 42:7
They are HIS billows, whether they go o’er us,
Hiding His face in smothering spray and foam;
Or smooth and sparkling, spread a path before us,
And to our haven bear us safely home.
They are HIS billows, whether for our succor
He walks across them, stilling all our fear;
Or to our cry there comes no aid nor answer,
And in the lonely silence none is near.
They are HIS billows, whether we are toiling
Through tempest-driven waves that never cease,
While deep to deep with clamor loud is calling;
Or at His word they hush themselves in peace.
They are HIS billows, whether He divides them,
Making us walk dryshod where seas had flowed;
Or lets tumultuous breakers surge about us,
Rushing unchecked across our only road.
They are HIS billows, and He brings us through them;
So He has promised, so His love will do.

Stand up in the place where the dear Lord has put you, and there do your best. God gives us trial tests. He puts life before us as an antagonist face to face. Out of the buffeting of a serious conflict we are expected to grow strong. The tree that grows where tempests toss its boughs and bend its trunk often almost to breaking, is often more firmly rooted than the tree which grows in the sequestered valley where no storm ever brings stress or strain.
