12월 22일 창세기 15:12 해 질 때에 아브람에게 깊은 잠이 임하고 큰 흑암과 두려움이 그에게 임하였더니
마침내 해가 지고 동쪽 하늘이 순식간에 어두워졌습니다. 힘든 하루 일로 정신과 육신이 모두 지친 아브라함이 깊이 잠들었습니다(12절). 잠에 떨어져 있는 동안 그의 영혼은 캄캄하고 무서운 어둠에 시달렸는데, 그에게는 숨 막히는 악몽과도 같았습니다. 이러한 어둠의 공포를 알고 있습니까? 하나님의 완전하신 사랑과 화해할 수 없을 것 같은 끔찍한 슬픔을 겪어 보았습니까? 말 그대로 무너져 내리는 슬픔, 여러분의 영혼에 은혜롭게 주신 안식을 비틀어 짜내 희망의 불빛 한 점 없는 캄캄한 바다에 던져 버리는 슬픔 말입니다. 무정한 슬픔을 겪어 보았습니까? 다른 사람들이 여러분의 신실한 마음을 잔인하게 짓밟고, 여러분은 기가 막혀 이런 일을 위에서 다 보시고도 그냥 놔두는 하나님이 어디 있느냐고 하소연할 수밖에 없는 슬픔 말입니다. 이런 슬픔을 안다면, 여러분은 캄캄하고 두려운 어둠을 안다고 할 수 있습니다.
인생은 밝고 어두우며, 햇빛과 그늘이 있고, 검은 구름 지나가면 밝은 빛 비칩니다. 하지만 하나님은 정의로우시니 이 모든 과정을 거쳐 결국 당신의 계획을 이루시고, 우리 각 영혼을 감화하시며 연단하시는 것입니다.
사랑하는 친구들이여, 하나님께서 인간을 대하시므로 캄캄하고 두려운 어둠에 잡혔거든, 한 치도 어긋남 없으신 그분의 지혜를 신뢰하십시오. 그 지혜는 변함없으신 정의와 같습니다. 그리고 또 알아야 할 것이 있으니, 갈보리의 무서운 어둠을 겪으셨으며 십자가에 달려 버림받음의 심정을 아시는 분께서 여러분과 동행하시니, "사망의 음침한 골짜기"를 지나 햇빛 비치는 데까지 함께 가신다는 것입니다.
"우리가 이 소망이 있는 것은 영혼의 닻 같아서 튼튼하고 견고하여 휘장 안에 들어가나니”(히 6:19)라고 했습니다. 우리의 닻은 그분의 성소 안에 있어서 보이지 않지만 튼튼하고 견고하니 결코 흔들림이 없습니다. 그 닻은 그 분 다시 오시기까지 변함이 없을 테고, 그때가 되면 우리 또한 그 닻을 따라, 변치 않는 하나님의 말씀으로 우리에게 보장된 안전한 하늘로 들어갈 것입니다.
제자들은 성난 바다로 인해 자신들과 예수님이 갈라졌다고 생각했습니다 이보다 더 심한 경우로, 몇몇 제자들은 아예 자신들이 처한 곤경은 그분께서 자신들을 잊고 돌아보지 않는 증거라고 생각하기까지 했습니다. 사랑하는 친구들이여, 이러한 생각이야말로 곤경 중에서도 가장 위험한 곤경입니다. 마귀가 와서 “하나님이 너를 잊었다, 하나님이 너를 버렸다” 고 속삭입니다. 여러분은 마음이 흔들려 기드온처럼 외칩니다. “여호와께서 우리와 함께 계시면 어찌하여 이 모든 일이 우리에게 일어났나이까" (삿 6:13). 하나님께서 여러분에게 어려움을 허락하심은 여러분을 그분 곁으로 더 가까이 오게 하려 하심입니다. 곤경은 여러분을 예수님에게서 떼어 놓는 것이 아니라, 더욱 신실하고 더욱 견고하고 더욱 단순히 그분께 매달리라는 뜻으로 있습니다.
하나님께서 우리를 포기하신 듯 보이는 그때, 우리는 좀 더 온전히 그분 앞에서 우리를 포기해야 합니다. 그분께서 기쁘게 주시는 빛과 위로를 우리는 받아 누려야 하겠지만, 우리가 매달려야 할 것은 그분의 선물이 아닙니다. 그러니 부디 그분께 매달리십시오. 그리고 우리의 순전한 믿음이 발휘되어야 하는 밤 깊은 곳으로 우리를 밀어 넣으시면, 부디 그 고통스러운 어둠 뚫고 나아가십시오.
오, 패배가 목전에 이른 듯할 때
승리를 몰아오는 믿음 있으라!
오, 몰아온 그 승리를 우렁찬
함성으로 바꾸는 믿음 있으라!!
승리하는 믿음, 패배와 두려움 모른다.

Night of Pure Faith
Lo, a horror of great darkness fell upon him — Gen 15:12
The sun at last went down, and the swift, eastern night cast its heavy veil over the scene. Worn out with the mental conflict, the watchings, and the exertions of the day, Abraham fell into a deep sleep, and in that sleep, his soul was oppressed with a dense and dreadful darkness, such as almost stifled him, and lay like a nightmare upon his heart. Do you understand something of the horror of that darkness? When some terrible sorrow which seems so hard to reconcile with perfect love, crushes down upon the soul, wringing from it all its peaceful rest in the pitifulness of God, and launching it on a sea unlit by a ray of hope; when unkindness, and cruelty maltreat the trusting heart, till it begins to doubt whether there be a God overhead who can see and still permit — these know something of the “horror of great darkness.” It is thus that human life is made up; brightness and gloom; shadow and sun; long tracks of cloud, succeeded by brilliant glints of light, and amid all Divine justice is working out its own schemes, affecting others equally with the individual soul which seems the subject of special discipline. O ye who are filled with the horror of great darkness because of God’s dealings with mankind, learn to trust that infallible wisdom, which is co-assessor with immutable justice; and know that He who passed through the horror of the darkness of Calvary, with the cry of forsakenness, is ready to bear you company through the valley of the shadow of death till you see the sun shining upon its further side. Let us, by our Forerunner, send forward our anchor, Hope, within the veil that parts us from the unseen; where it will grapple in ground and will not yield, but hold until the day dawns, and we follow it into the haven guaranteed to us by God’s immutable counsel. — F. The disciples thought that that angry sea separated them from Jesus. Nay, some of them thought worse than that; they thought that the trouble that had come upon them was a sign that Jesus had forgotten all about them, and did not care for them. Oh, dear friend, that is when troubles have a sting, when the devil whispers, “God has forgotten you; God has forsaken you”; when your unbelieving heart cries as Gideon cried, “If the Lord be with us, why then is all this befallen us?” The evil has come upon you to bring the Lord nearer to you. Never should we so abandon ourselves to God as when He seems to have abandoned us. Let us enjoy light and consolation when it is His pleasure to give it to us, but let us not attach ourselves to His gifts, but to Himself; and when He plunges us into the night of pure faith, let us still press on through the agonizing darkness.
