하나님께서 임박한 일을 말씀하십니다. 앞으로 하시려는 일이 아니라 지금 이 순간 하시는 일입니다. 믿음이 계속 말하면 하나님께서도 계속 주십니다. 그분께서는 지금 이 순간 여러분을 만나시고 믿음을 시험하십니다. 기다리고 희망하고 바란다 해서 믿는다고 할 수는 없습니다. 열심히 희망하고 원할 수 있겠지만 그것 자체가 믿음은 아닙니다. “믿음은 바라는 것들의 실상이요 보이지 않는 것들의 증거" 이기에 그렇습니다(히 11:1). 믿음의 기도와 관련한 명령이 이와 같습니다. “무엇이든지 기도하고 구하는 것은 받은 줄로 믿으라. 그리하면 너희에게 그대로 되리라" (막 11:24). 우리는 지금 이 순간 받았음을 믿어야 합니다. 지금 이 순간은 그분의 영원한 현재입니다. 우리는 늘 영원한 지금 하나님과 만나는 단계에 와 있습니까?
참된 믿음은 하나님을 의지하며 안 보고 믿습니다. 뭔가 우리의 간청이 받아들여졌다는 증거를 본 뒤에야 믿으려는 것이 인간의 본능입니다만, 믿음으로 살면(고후 5:7) 하나님의 말씀 외에 다른 증거는 필요하지 않습니다. 하나님께서 말씀하셨으니 그 말씀이 우리의 믿음과 만나면 이루어집니다. 우리는 믿었으므로 볼 것이며, 참된 믿음은 험난한 시련 속에서 우리를 붙들어 줍니다. 그렇습니다. 주변의 모든 것이 하나님의 말씀과 정반대로 움직이는 듯한 상황에서도 진정 우리를 든든히 붙들어 줍니다. 시편기자는 말했습니다. "내가 산 자들의 땅에서 여호와의 선하심을 보게 될 줄 확실히 믿었도다” (시 27:13). 그는 주님의 응답을 아직 못 보았으나 보리라고 확신했으며, 이 확신이 그를 붙들어 주었습니다.
보리라고 믿는 믿음이 있어 우리는 낙심하지 아니할 것입니다. 우리는 불가능해 보이는 상황을 일소에 부치며, 이제 곧 하나님의 능력으로 홍해에 길이 열리는 장관을 지켜볼 것입니다. 이처럼 인간의 힘으로는 벗어날 길 없는 극심한 시련의 현장에서 우리의 믿음이 자라고 강해집니다.
시련에 놓인 이들이여, 하나님께서 오시기를 밤낮으로 기다리다 지쳤습니까? 영영 잊혔을까 두렵습니까? 지금 고개를 들어 하나님을 찬양하십시오. 이미 구원이 오고 있습니다.

Believing Before Seeing

God here speaks in the immediate present. It is not something He is going to do, but something He does do, this moment. So faith ever speaks. So God ever gives. So He is meeting you today, in the present moment. This is the test of faith. So long as you are waiting for a thing, hoping for it, looking for it, you are not believing. It may be hope, it may be earnest desire, but it is not faith; for “faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” The command in regard to believing prayer is the present tense. “When ye pray, believe that ye receive the things that ye desire, and ye shall have them.” Have we come to that moment? True faith counts on God, and believes before it sees. Naturally, we want some evidence that our petition is granted before we believe; but when we walk by faith we need no other evidence than God’s Word. He has spoken, and according to our faith it shall be done unto us. We shall see because we have believed, and this faith sustains us in the most trying places, when everything around us seems to contradict God’s Word.
The Psalmist says, “I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of the Lord in the land of living” (Ps. 27:13). He did not see as yet the Lord’s answer to his prayers, but he believed to see; and this kept him from fainting.
If we have the faith that believes to see, it will keep us from growing discouraged. We shall “laugh at impossibilities,” we shall watch with delight to see how God is going to open up a path through the Red Sea when there is no human way out of our difficulty. It is just in such places of severe testing that our faith grows and strengthens.
Have you been waiting upon God, dear troubled one, during long nights and weary days, and have feared that you were forgotten? Nay, lift up your head, and begin to praise Him even now for the deliverance which is on its way to you. —Life of Praise
