1. 얼마 뒤에, 모압 자손과 암몬 자손이 마온 사람들과 결탁하여, 여호사밧에게 맞서서 싸움을 걸어왔다.
2. 전령들이 와서 여호사밧에게 보고하였다. "큰 부대가 사해 건너편 에돔에서 임금님을 치러 왔습니다. 그들은 이미 하사손다말 곧 엔게디에 쳐들어 왔습니다."
3. 이에 놀란 여호사밧은, 주님께서 인도하여 주실 것을 비는 기도를 드리고, 온 유다 백성에게 금식령을 내렸다.
4. 백성이 유다 각 성읍에서 예루살렘으로 모여, 주님의 뜻을 찾았다.
5. 여호사밧이 주님의 성전 새 뜰 앞에 모인 유다와 예루살렘 회중 가운데 서서,
6. 이렇게 기도하였다. "주 우리 조상의 하나님, 주님은 하늘에 계시는 하나님이 아니십니까? 세계 만민의 모든 나라를 다스리는 분이 아니십니까? 권세와 능력이 주님께 있으니, 아무도 주님께 맞설 사람이 없습니다.
7. 우리 하나님, 주님께서는 전에 이 땅에 사는 사람들을 주님의 백성 이스라엘 앞에서 쫓아내시고, 그 땅을 주님의 벗 아브라함의 자손에게 길이 주신 분이 아니십니까?
8. 그래서 우리는 이 땅에 살면서 주님의 이름을 빛내려고, 한 성소를 지어 바치고, 이렇게 다짐한 바 있습니다.
9. '전쟁이나 전염병이나 기근과 같은 재난이 닥쳐 온다면, 하나님 앞, 곧 주님의 이름을 빛내는 이 성전 앞에 모여 서서, 재난 가운데서 주님께 부르짖겠고, 그러면 주님께서 들으시고 구원하여 주실 것이다' 하고 말하였습니다.
10. 이제 보십시오, 암몬 자손과 모압 자손과 세일 산에 사는 사람들이 우리를 저렇게 공격하여 왔습니다. 옛적에 이스라엘이 이집트에서 나올 때에, 주님께서는 이스라엘이 그들의 땅으로 들어가는 것을 허락하지 않으셨습니다. 그리하여 우리 조상은 그들을 멸망시키지 않고 돌아와야만 했습니다.
11. 그런데 이제 그들이 우리에게 앙갚음을 하는 것을 보십시오. 주님께서 우리에게 유산으로 주신 주님의 땅에서, 우리를 쫓아내려 하고 있습니다.
12. 우리 편을 드시는 하나님, 그들에게 벌을 내리지 않으시렵니까? 우리를 치러 온 저 큰 대군을 대적할 능력이 우리에게는 없고, 어찌할 바도 알지 못하고, 이렇게 주님만 바라보고 있을 뿐입니다."
13. 유다 모든 백성은 아녀자들까지도 모두 주님 앞에 나와 서 있었다.
14. 그 때에 마침 회중 가운데는, 야하시엘이라는 레위 사람이 있었는데, 그에게 주님의 영이 내리셨다. 그의 아버지는 스가랴이고 할아버지는 브나야이고 증조는 여이엘이고 고조는 맛다니야이다.
15. 그가 이렇게 말하였다. "온 유다와 예루살렘에 사는 사람들과 여호사밧 임금님은 들으시기 바랍니다. 주님께서 여러분에게 말씀하십니다. '적군이 아무리 많다 하여도, 너희들은 두려워하거나 겁내지 말아라. 이 전쟁은 너희가 하는 것이 아니라, 나 하나님이 맡아 하는 것이다.
16. 너희는 내일 그들을 마주하여 내려가라. 적군은 시스 고개로 올라올 것이다. 여루엘 들 맞은편에서 너희가 그들을 만날 것이다.
17. 이 전쟁에서는 너희가 싸울 것이 없다. 너희는 대열만 정비하고 굳게 서서, 나 주가 너희에게 승리를 가져다 주는 것을 보아라. 유다와 예루살렘아, 너희는 두려워하지 말아라. 겁내지 말아라. 내일 적들을 맞아 싸우러 나가거라. 나 주가 너희와 함께 있겠다.'"
18. 여호사밧이 몸을 굽혀 얼굴을 땅에 대니, 온 유다 백성과 예루살렘 주민도 주님 앞에 엎드려 경배하고,
19. 고핫 자손과 고라 자손에게 속한 레위 사람들은, 서서 목소리를 높여, 주 이스라엘의 하나님을 찬양하였다.
20. 백성은 다음날 아침 일찍 일어나서, 드고아 들로 나갔다. 나갈 때에, 여호사밧이 나서서 격려하였다. "유다와 예루살렘 주민은 내가 하는 말을 들으십시오. 주 우리의 하나님을 믿어야만 흔들리지 않습니다. 주님께서 보내신 예언자들을 신뢰하십시오. 우리는 반드시 이깁니다."
21. 여호사밧은 백성들과 의논한 다음에, 노래하는 사람들을 뽑아 거룩한 예복을 입히고, 군대 앞에서 행진하게 하였다. 그는 또 노래하는 사람들이 "주님께 감사하여라. 그의 인자하심이 영원하다" 하면서, 주님을 찬양하게 하였다.
22. 노래하는 사람들이 그렇게 노래를 부르니, 주님께서 복병을 시켜서 유다를 치러 온 암몬 자손과 모압 자손과 세일 산에서 온 사람들을 치게 하셔서, 그들을 대파하셨다.
23. 오히려 암몬 자손과 모압 자손이 짝이 되어서, 세일 산에서 온 사람들을 모조리 쳐죽이는 것이 아닌가! 세일 산에서 온 사람들을 쳐죽인 다음에는, 암몬 자손과 모압 자손이 서로 쳐죽였다.
24. 유다 사람들이 들판이 내려다 보이는 망대에 이르러서 보니, 적군이 하나도 살아 남지 못하고, 모두 주검이 되어 땅에 엎어져 있었다.
25. 여호사밧이 백성을 데리고 가서, 전리품을 거두어들였다. 전리품 가운데는 상당히 많은 물건과 옷과 귀중품이 있었다. 그래서 각자가 마음껏 탈취하였는데, 전리품이 너무 많아서 운반할 수가 없었다. 전리품이 이처럼 많아서, 그것을 다 거두어들이는 데에 사흘이나 걸렸다.
26. 나흘째 되던 날에, 그들은 브라가 골짜기에 모여서, 거기서 주님을 찬양하였다. 오늘날도 사람들은 그 곳을 '찬양 （브라가） 골짜기'라고 부른다.
27. 유다와 예루살렘 모든 사람이 여호사밧을 앞세우고, 기쁨에 넘쳐 예루살렘으로 개선하였다. 이것은 주님께서 원수들을 쳐서 이겨서, 유다 백성을 기쁘게 해주셨기 때문이다.
28. 사람들은 거문고와 수금과 나팔을 합주하며, 예루살렘에 이르러, 주님의 성전으로 나아갔다.
29. 이방 모든 나라가 주님께서 이스라엘의 원수들을 치셨다는 소문을 듣고, 하나님을 두려워하였다.
30. 여호사밧이 다스리는 동안 나라가 태평하였다. 하나님께서 사방으로 그에게 평안함을 주셨기 때문이다.
31. 여호사밧은 유다의 왕이 되었을 때에 서른다섯 살이었다. 그는 예루살렘에서 스물다섯 해 동안 다스렸다. 그의 어머니 아수바는 실히의 딸이다.
32. 여호사밧은 자기의 아버지 아사가 걸어 간 길에서 벗어나지 아니하고, 그 길을 그대로 걸어, 주님께서 보시기에 정직하게 행하였으나,
33. 산당만은 헐어 버리지 않아서, 백성이 조상의 하나님만을 섬기게 하지는 못하였다.
34. 여호사밧의 나머지 역사는 처음부터 끝까지 '하나니의 아들 예후의 역사책'에 다 기록되었고, 그것은 '이스라엘 열왕기'에 올랐다.
35. 한번은 유다의 여호사밧 왕과 이스라엘의 아하시야 왕 사이에 동맹을 맺은 일이 있었는데, 아하시야는 악행을 많이 저지른 왕이었다.
36. 아하시야의 권유로 여호사밧이 다시스를 왕래할 상선을 만들었다. 배를 만든 곳은 에시온게벨이었다.
37. 그 때에 마레사 사람 도다와후의 아들 엘리에셀이 여호사밧에게 와서 "임금님께서 아하시야와 동맹을 맺으셨으므로, 주님께서 임금님이 만드신 상선을 부수실 것입니다" 하고 예언하였다. 그의 말대로, 그 배는 부서져서 다시스로 가지 못하였다.

1. After this, the Moabites and Ammonites with some of the Meunites came to make war on Jehoshaphat.
2. Some men came and told Jehoshaphat, "A vast army is coming against you from Edom, from the other side of the Sea. It is already in Hazazon Tamar" (that is, En Gedi).
3. Alarmed, Jehoshaphat resolved to inquire of the LORD, and he proclaimed a fast for all Judah.
4. The people of Judah came together to seek help from the LORD; indeed, they came from every town in Judah to seek him.
5. Then Jehoshaphat stood up in the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem at the temple of the LORD in the front of the new courtyard
6. and said: "O LORD, God of our fathers, are you not the God who is in heaven? You rule over all the kingdoms of the nations. Power and might are in your hand, and no one can withstand you.
7. O our God, did you not drive out the inhabitants of this land before your people Israel and give it forever to the descendants of Abraham your friend?
8. They have lived in it and have built in it a sanctuary for your Name, saying,
9. 'If calamity comes upon us, whether the sword of judgment, or plague or famine, we will stand in your presence before this temple that bears your Name and will cry out to you in our distress, and you will hear us and save us.'
10. "But now here are men from Ammon, Moab and Mount Seir, whose territory you would not allow Israel to invade when they came from Egypt; so they turned away from them and did not destroy them.
11. See how they are repaying us by coming to drive us out of the possession you gave us as an inheritance.
12. O our God, will you not judge them? For we have no power to face this vast army that is attacking us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are upon you."
13. All the men of Judah, with their wives and children and little ones, stood there before the LORD.
14. Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jahaziel son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a Levite and descendant of Asaph, as he stood in the assembly.
15. He said: "Listen, King Jehoshaphat and all who live in Judah and Jerusalem! This is what the LORD says to you: 'Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God's.
16. Tomorrow march down against them. They will be climbing up by the Pass of Ziz, and you will find them at the end of the gorge in the Desert of Jeruel.
17. You will not have to fight this battle. Take up your positions; stand firm and see the deliverance the LORD will give you, O Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Go out to face them tomorrow, and the LORD will be with you.' "
18. Jehoshaphat bowed with his face to the ground, and all the people of Judah and Jerusalem fell down in worship before the LORD.
19. Then some Levites from the Kohathites and Korahites stood up and praised the LORD, the God of Israel, with very loud voice.
20. Early in the morning they left for the Desert of Tekoa. As they set out, Jehoshaphat stood and said, "Listen to me, Judah and people of Jerusalem! Have faith in the LORD your God and you will be upheld; have faith in his prophets and you will be successful."
21. After consulting the people, Jehoshaphat appointed men to sing to the LORD and to praise him for the splendor of his holiness as they went out at the head of the army, saying: "Give thanks to the LORD, for his love endures forever."
22. As they began to sing and praise, the LORD set ambushes against the men of Ammon and Moab and Mount Seir who were invading Judah, and they were defeated.
23. The men of Ammon and Moab rose up against the men from Mount Seir to destroy and annihilate them. After they finished slaughtering the men from Seir, they helped to destroy one another.
24. When the men of Judah came to the place that overlooks the desert and looked toward the vast army, they saw only dead bodies lying on the ground; no one had escaped.
25. So Jehoshaphat and his men went to carry off their plunder, and they found among them a great amount of equipment and clothing and also articles of value--more than they could take away. There was so much plunder that it took three days to collect it.
26. On the fourth day they assembled in the Valley of Beracah, where they praised the LORD. This is why it is called the Valley of Beracah to this day.
27. Then, led by Jehoshaphat, all the men of Judah and Jerusalem returned joyfully to Jerusalem, for the LORD had given them cause to rejoice over their enemies.
28. They entered Jerusalem and went to the temple of the LORD with harps and lutes and trumpets.
29. The fear of God came upon all the kingdoms of the countries when they heard how the LORD had fought against the enemies of Israel.
30. And the kingdom of Jehoshaphat was at peace, for his God had given him rest on every side.
31. So Jehoshaphat reigned over Judah. He was thirty-five years old when he became king of Judah, and he reigned in Jerusalem twenty-five years. His mother's name was Azubah daughter of Shilhi.
32. He walked in the ways of his father Asa and did not stray from them; he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD.
33. The high places, however, were not removed, and the people still had not set their hearts on the God of their fathers.
34. The other events of Jehoshaphat's reign, from beginning to end, are written in the annals of Jehu son of Hanani, which are recorded in the book of the kings of Israel.
35. Later, Jehoshaphat king of Judah made an alliance with Ahaziah king of Israel, who was guilty of wickedness.
36. He agreed with him to construct a fleet of trading ships. After these were built at Ezion Geber,
37. Eliezer son of Dodavahu of Mareshah prophesied against Jehoshaphat, saying, "Because you have made an alliance with Ahaziah, the LORD will destroy what you have made." The ships were wrecked and were not able to set sail to trade.
