1The word of the LORD came to me:
1וַיְהִי דְבַר־יְהוָה אֵלַי לֵאמֹר׃
2"Son of man, speak to your countrymen and say to them: 'When I bring the sword against a land, and the people of the land choose one of their men and make him their watchman,
2בֶּן־אָדָם דַּבֵּר אֶל־בְּנֵי־עַמְּךָ וְאָמַרְתָּ אֲלֵיהֶם אֶרֶץ כִּי־אָבִיא עָלֶיהָ חָרֶב וְלָקְחוּ עַם־הָאָרֶץ אִישׁ אֶחָד מִקְצֵיהֶם וְנָתְנוּ אֹתֹו לָהֶם לְצֹפֶה׃
3and he sees the sword coming against the land and blows the trumpet to warn the people,
3וְרָאָה אֶת־הַחֶרֶב בָּאָה עַל־הָאָרֶץ וְתָקַע בַּשֹּׁופָר וְהִזְהִיר אֶת־הָעָם׃
4then if anyone hears the trumpet but does not take warning and the sword comes and takes his life, his blood will be on his own head.
4וְשָׁמַע הַשֹּׁמֵעַ אֶת־קֹול הַשֹּׁופָר וְלֹא נִזְהָר וַתָּבֹוא חֶרֶב וַתִּקָּחֵהוּ דָּמֹו בְרֹאשֹׁו יִהְיֶה׃
5Since he heard the sound of the trumpet but did not take warning, his blood will be on his own head. If he had taken warning, he would have saved himself.
5אֵת קֹול הַשֹּׁופָר שָׁמַע וְלֹא נִזְהָר דָּמֹו בֹּו יִהְיֶה וְהוּא נִזְהָר נַפְשֹׁו מִלֵּט׃
6But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet to warn the people and the sword comes and takes the life of one of them, that man will be taken away because of his sin, but I will hold the watchman accountable for his blood.'
6וְהַצֹּפֶה כִּי־יִרְאֶה אֶת־הַחֶרֶב בָּאָה וְלֹא־תָקַע בַּשֹּׁופָר וְהָעָם לֹא־נִזְהָר וַתָּבֹוא חֶרֶב וַתִּקַּח מֵהֶם נָפֶשׁ הוּא בַּעֲוֹנֹו נִלְקָח וְדָמֹו מִיַּד־הַצֹּפֶה אֶדְרֹשׁ׃ ס
7Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel; so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me.
7וְאַתָּה בֶן־אָדָם צֹפֶה נְתַתִּיךָ לְבֵית יִשְׂרָאֵל וְשָׁמַעְתָּ מִפִּי דָּבָר וְהִזְהַרְתָּ אֹתָם מִמֶּנִּי׃
8When I say to the wicked, 'O wicked man, you will surely die,' and you do not speak out to dissuade him from his ways, that wicked man will die for his sin, and I will hold you accountable for his blood.
8בְּאָמְרִי לָרָשָׁע רָשָׁע מֹות תָּמוּת וְלֹא דִבַּרְתָּ לְהַזְהִיר רָשָׁע מִדַּרְכֹּו הוּא רָשָׁע בַעֲוֹנֹו יָמוּת וְדָמֹו מִיָּדְךָ אֲבַקֵּשׁ׃
9But if you do warn the wicked man to turn from his ways and he does not do so, he will die for his sin, but you will have saved yourself.
9וְאַתָּה כִּי־הִזְהַרְתָּ רָשָׁע מִדַּרְכֹּו לָשׁוּב מִמֶּנָּה וְלֹא־שָׁב מִדַּרְכֹּו הוּא בַּעֲוֹנֹו יָמוּת וְאַתָּה נַפְשְׁךָ הִצַּלְתָּ׃ ס
10"Son of man, say to the house of Israel, 'This is what you are saying: "Our offenses and sins weigh us down, and we are wasting away because of them. How then can we live?" '
10וְאַתָּה בֶן־אָדָם אֱמֹר אֶל־בֵּית יִשְׂרָאֵל כֵּן אֲמַרְתֶּם לֵאמֹר כִּי־פְשָׁעֵינוּ וְחַטֹּאתֵינוּ עָלֵינוּ וּבָם אֲנַחְנוּ נְמַקִּים וְאֵיךְ נִחְיֶה׃
11Say to them, 'As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign LORD, I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that they turn from their ways and live. Turn! Turn from your evil ways! Why will you die, O house of Israel?'
11אֱמֹר אֲלֵיהֶם חַי־אָנִי נְאֻם אֲדֹנָי יְהוִה אִם־אֶחְפֹּץ בְּמֹות הָרָשָׁע כִּי אִם־בְּשׁוּב רָשָׁע מִדַּרְכֹּו וְחָיָה שׁוּבוּ שׁוּבוּ מִדַּרְכֵיכֶם הָרָעִים וְלָמָּה תָמוּתוּ בֵּית יִשְׂרָאֵל׃ ף
12"Therefore, son of man, say to your countrymen, 'The righteousness of the righteous man will not save him when he disobeys, and the wickedness of the wicked man will not cause him to fall when he turns from it. The righteous man, if he sins, will not be allowed to live because of his former righteousness.'
12וְאַתָּה בֶן־אָדָם אֱמֹר אֶל־בְּנֵי־עַמְּךָ צִדְקַת הַצַּדִּיק לֹא תַצִּילֶנּוּ בְּיֹום פִּשְׁעֹו וְרִשְׁעַת הָרָשָׁע לֹא־יִכָּשֶׁל בָּהּ בְּיֹום שׁוּבֹו מֵרִשְׁעֹו וְצַדִּיק לֹא יוּכַל לִחְיֹות בָּהּ בְּיֹום חֲטֹאתֹו׃
13If I tell the righteous man that he will surely live, but then he trusts in his righteousness and does evil, none of the righteous things he has done will be remembered; he will die for the evil he has done.
13בְּאָמְרִי לַצַּדִּיק חָיֹה יִחְיֶה וְהוּא־בָטַח עַל־צִדְקָתֹו וְעָשָׂה עָוֶל כָּל־[כ= צִדְקָתֹו] [ק= צִדְקֹתָיו] לֹא תִזָּכַרְנָה וּבְעַוְלֹו אֲשֶׁר־עָשָׂה בֹּו יָמוּת׃
14And if I say to the wicked man, 'You will surely die,' but he then turns away from his sin and does what is just and right-
14וּבְאָמְרִי לָרָשָׁע מֹות תָּמוּת וְשָׁב מֵחַטָּאתֹו וְעָשָׂה מִשְׁפָּט וּצְדָקָה׃
15if he gives back what he took in pledge for a loan, returns what he has stolen, follows the decrees that give life, and does no evil, he will surely live; he will not die.
15חֲבֹל יָשִׁיב רָשָׁע גְּזֵלָה יְשַׁלֵּם בְּחֻקֹּות הַחַיִּים הָלַךְ לְבִלְתִּי עֲשֹׂות עָוֶל חָיֹו יִחְיֶה לֹא יָמוּת׃
16None of the sins he has committed will be remembered against him. He has done what is just and right; he will surely live.
16כָּל־[כ= חַטָּאתֹו] [ק= חַטֹּאתָיו] אֲשֶׁר חָטָא לֹא תִזָּכַרְנָה לֹו מִשְׁפָּט וּצְדָקָה עָשָׂה חָיֹו יִחְיֶה׃
17"Yet your countrymen say, 'The way of the Lord is not just.' But it is their way that is not just.
17וְאָמְרוּ בְּנֵי עַמְּךָ לֹא יִתָּכֵן דֶּרֶךְ אֲדֹנָי וְהֵמָּה דַּרְכָּם לֹא־יִתָּכֵן׃
18If a righteous man turns from his righteousness and does evil, he will die for it.
18בְּשׁוּב־צַדִּיק מִצִּדְקָתֹו וְעָשָׂה עָוֶל וּמֵת בָּהֶם׃
19And if a wicked man turns away from his wickedness and does what is just and right, he will live by doing so.
19וּבְשׁוּב רָשָׁע מֵרִשְׁעָתֹו וְעָשָׂה מִשְׁפָּט וּצְדָקָה עֲלֵיהֶם הוּא יִחְיֶה׃
20Yet, O house of Israel, you say, 'The way of the Lord is not just.' But I will judge each of you according to his own ways."
20וַאֲמַרְתֶּם לֹא יִתָּכֵן דֶּרֶךְ אֲדֹנָי אִישׁ כִּדְרָכָיו אֶשְׁפֹּוט אֶתְכֶם בֵּית יִשְׂרָאֵל׃ ף
21In the twelfth year of our exile, in the tenth month on the fifth day, a man who had escaped from Jerusalem came to me and said, "The city has fallen!'
21וַיְהִי בִּשְׁתֵּי עֶשְׂרֵה שָׁנָה בָּעֲשִׂרִי בַּחֲמִשָּׁה לַחֹדֶשׁ לְגָלוּתֵנוּ בָּא־אֵלַי הַפָּלִיט מִירוּשָׁלִַם לֵאמֹר הֻכְּתָה הָעִיר׃
22Now the evening before the man arrived, the hand of the LORD was upon me, and he opened my mouth before the man came to me in the morning. So my mouth was opened and I was no longer silent.
22וְיַד־יְהוָה הָיְתָה אֵלַי בָּעֶרֶב לִפְנֵי בֹּוא הַפָּלִיט וַיִּפְתַּח אֶת־פִּי עַד־בֹּוא אֵלַי בַּבֹּקֶר וַיִּפָּתַח פִּי וְלֹא נֶאֱלַמְתִּי עֹוד׃ ף
23Then the word of the LORD came to me:
23וַיְהִי דְבַר־יְהוָה* אֵלַי לֵאמֹר׃
24"Son of man, the people living in those ruins in the land of Israel are saying, 'Abraham was only one man, yet he possessed the land. But we are many; surely the land has been given to us as our possession.'
24בֶּן־אָדָם יֹשְׁבֵי הֶחֳרָבֹות הָאֵלֶּה עַל־אַדְמַת יִשְׂרָאֵל אֹמְרִים לֵאמֹר אֶחָד הָיָה אַבְרָהָם וַיִּירַשׁ אֶת־הָאָרֶץ וַאֲנַחְנוּ רַבִּים לָנוּ נִתְּנָה הָאָרֶץ לְמֹורָשָׁה׃ ס
25Therefore say to them, 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: Since you eat meat with the blood still in it and look to your idols and shed blood, should you then possess the land?
25לָכֵן אֱמֹר אֲלֵיהֶם כֹּה־אָמַר אֲדֹנָי יְהֹוִה עַל־הַדָּם תֹּאכֵלוּ וְעֵינֵכֶם תִּשְׂאוּ אֶל־גִּלּוּלֵיכֶם וְדָם תִּשְׁפֹּכוּ וְהָאָרֶץ תִּירָשׁוּ׃
26You rely on your sword, you do detestable things, and each of you defiles his neighbor's wife. Should you then possess the land?'
26עֲמַדְתֶּם עַל־חַרְבְּכֶם עֲשִׂיתֶן תֹּועֵבָה וְאִישׁ אֶת־אֵשֶׁת רֵעֵהוּ טִמֵּאתֶם וְהָאָרֶץ תִּירָשׁוּ׃ ס
27"Say this to them: 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: As surely as I live, those who are left in the ruins will fall by the sword, those out in the country I will give to the wild animals to be devoured, and those in strongholds and caves will die of a plague.
27כֹּה־תֹאמַר אֲלֵהֶם כֹּה־אָמַר אֲדֹנָי יְהוִה חַי־אָנִי אִם־לֹא אֲשֶׁר בֶּחֳרָבֹות בַּחֶרֶב יִפֹּלוּ וַאֲשֶׁר עַל־פְּנֵי הַשָּׂדֶה לַחַיָּה נְתַתִּיו לְאָכְלֹו וַאֲשֶׁר בַּמְּצָדֹות וּבַמְּעָרֹות בַּדֶּבֶר יָמוּתוּ׃
28I will make the land a desolate waste, and her proud strength will come to an end, and the mountains of Israel will become desolate so that no one will cross them.
28וְנָתַתִּי אֶת־הָאָרֶץ שְׁמָמָה וּמְשַׁמָּה וְנִשְׁבַּת גְּאֹון עֻזָּהּ וְשָׁמְמוּ הָרֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל מֵאֵין עֹובֵר׃
29Then they will know that I am the LORD, when I have made the land a desolate waste because of all the detestable things they have done.'
29וְיָדְעוּ כִּי־אֲנִי יְהוָה בְּתִתִּי אֶת־הָאָרֶץ שְׁמָמָה וּמְשַׁמָּה עַל כָּל־תֹּועֲבֹתָם אֲשֶׁר עָשׂוּ׃ ס
30"As for you, son of man, your countrymen are talking together about you by the walls and at the doors of the houses, saying to each other, 'Come and hear the message that has come from the LORD.'
30וְאַתָּה בֶן־אָדָם בְּנֵי עַמְּךָ הַנִּדְבָּרִים בְּךָ אֵצֶל הַקִּירֹות וּבְפִתְחֵי הַבָּתִּים וְדִבֶּר־חַד אֶת־אַחַד אִישׁ אֶת־אָחִיו לֵאמֹר בֹּאוּ־נָא וְשִׁמְעוּ מָה הַדָּבָר הַיֹּוצֵא מֵאֵת יְהוָה׃
31My people come to you, as they usually do, and sit before you to listen to your words, but they do not put them into practice. With their mouths they express devotion, but their hearts are greedy for unjust gain.
31וְיָבֹואוּ אֵלֶיךָ כִּמְבֹוא־עָם וְיֵשְׁבוּ לְפָנֶיךָ עַמִּי וְשָׁמְעוּ אֶת־דְּבָרֶיךָ וְאֹותָם לֹא יַעֲשׂוּ כִּי־עֲגָבִים בְּפִיהֶם הֵמָּה עֹשִׂים אַחֲרֵי בִצְעָם לִבָּם הֹלֵךְ׃
32Indeed, to them you are nothing more than one who sings love songs with a beautiful voice and plays an instrument well, for they hear your words but do not put them into practice.
32וְהִנְּךָ לָהֶם כְּשִׁיר עֲגָבִים יְפֵה קֹול וּמֵטִב נַגֵּן וְשָׁמְעוּ אֶת־דְּבָרֶיךָ וְעֹשִׂים אֵינָם אֹותָם׃
33'When all this comes true-and it surely will-then they will know that a prophet has been among them.'
33וּבְבֹאָהּ הִנֵּה בָאָה וְיָדְעוּ כִּי נָבִיא הָיָה בְתֹוכָם׃ ס
1여호와께서 내게 말씀하셨다.
2"사람아, 네 백성들에게 말하여라, 그들에게 전하여라. 내가 어떤 땅을 향하여 칼을 드니, 그 땅의 사람들이 그들 중 한 명을 선택해서, 그를 경계병으로 세웠다.
3그는 이 칼이 그 땅을 향해 오는 것을 보고 백성들에게 알리고자 나팔을 불었는데,
4그 때에 만약 어떤 사람이 나팔 소리를 듣고도 경고를 받아들이지 않아, 칼이 와서 그의 생명을 가져갔다면, 그의 피흘림은 그 자신의 탓일 것이다.
5그가 나팔 소리를 듣고도 경고를 받아들이지 않았기 때문에, 그의 피흘림은 그 자신의 탓이다. 만약 그가 경고를 받아들였다면, 그는 자신을 구할 수 있었을 것이다.
6그러나 경계병이 칼이 오는 것을 보고도 나팔을 불지 않아 사람들에게 알리지 않았다면, 칼이 와서 그들 중 하나를 죽일 것이요, 그 사람은 자신의 죄 때문에 죽게 될 것이나, 나는 그의 피를 경계병의 잘못으로 돌릴 것이다.
7사람아, 내가 너를 이스라엘의 경계병으로 세웠다. 그러니 너는 내가 하는 말을 듣고, 그들에게 내가 주는 경고를 전하여라.
8내가 악한 사람들에게, '오 악한 자여, 네가 반드시 죽을 것이다'라고 말하면, 너는 그에게 악한 길을 단념하라고 목소리를 높여야 한다. 그렇지 않으면 그 악한 자는 자신의 죄 때문에 죽을 것이나, 나는 그의 피를 네 탓으로 돌릴 것이다.
9그러나 만약 네가 그 악한 사람에게 그의 길에서 돌이키도록 경고했으나, 그가 돌이키지 않는다면, 그는 자신의 죄 때문에 죽을 것이며 너는 목숨을 건질 수 있을 것이다.
10사람아, 이스라엘의 집에 말하여라. 그들은 '우리의 잘못과 죄악이 우리를 짓누르고 있고, 이것들 때문에 우리가 야위어 가고 있다. 그러하니 우리가 어떻게 살 수 있을까?'라고 말하고 있다.
11그들에게 말하여라. '주 여호와께서 말씀하신다. 맹세코, 나는 악한 사람이 죽는 것을 즐거워하지 않으며, 오히려 그들이 악한 길에서 돌이켜 살기를 바란다. 돌아오너라! 너의 악한 길에서 돌아오너라! 오 이스라엘의 집이여, 왜 네가 죽으려 하느냐?'
12사람아, 네 백성들에게 말하여라. '의로운 자의 의로움이라도 그가 순종하지 않을 때는 그를 구하지 못할 것이요, 악한 사람의 악함이라도 그가 악에서 돌이킬 때는 그를 넘어지게 하지 않을 것이다. 의로운 사람이라도 그가 죄를 짓게 된다면, 이전의 그의 의로움 덕분에 살지는 못할 것이다.'
13만약 내가 의로운 사람에게 말하기를 '너는 반드시 살 것이다'라고 하였어도, 그가 자신의 의로움을 믿고 악을 행하면, 그가 이전에 행했던 모든 의로운 일들이 하나도 기억되지 않을 것이다. 그는 악한 일들 때문에 죽게 될 것이다.
14또 내가 악한 사람에게 말하기를 '너는 반드시 죽을 것이다'라고 하였어도, 그가 죄에서 돌이켜 정의롭고 옳은 일을 행하여,
15빚에 대한 담보로 받은 것을 돌려 주고, 그가 이전에 훔쳤던 것을 되돌려 주며, 생명에 이르게 하는 규정들을 그가 따른다면, 그는 반드시 살고 죽지 않을 것이다.
16그가 과거에 저지른 모든 죄가 하나도 기억되지 않을 것이며, 그가 정의롭고 옳은 일을 행하였기에, 그는 반드시 살 것이다.
17그러나 네 백성들은 '여호와의 길은 정의롭지 않다'라고 말하고 있다. 그러나 정의롭지 않은 것은 바로 그들의 길이다.
18만약 의로운 사람이 그의 의로움에서 돌이켜 악을 행한다면, 그는 죽을 것이다.
19또한 만약 어떤 악한 사람이 그의 악에서 돌이켜 정의롭고 옳은 일을 한다면, 그는 살게 될 것이다.
20오 이스라엘의 집이여, 너는 '여호와의 길이 정의롭지 않다'라고 말하고 있다. 그러나 나는 너희 모두를 각 사람이 행한 대로 심판할 것이다."
21우리가 포로로 잡혀 온 지 십이 년째 되는 해 열째 달 오 일에, 예루살렘으로부터 탈출한 한 사람이 내게 와서 "예루살렘이 함락되었습니다!"라고 말했다.
22이 사람이 도착하기 전날 저녁에, 여호와의 손이 내게 임했고, 이 사람이 아침에 내게 오기 전에, 여호와께서 나의 입을 여셨다. 그래서 이제 나는 더 이상 잠잠치 않았다.
23그 때에 여호와께서 내게 말씀하셨다.
24"사람아, 폐허가 된 이스라엘 땅에 살고 있는 사람들이 말하기를, '아브라함은 단지 한 사람에 불과했는데도, 이 땅을 차지했다. 그런데 우리는 수가 많으니 분명히 이 땅은 우리의 것으로 우리에게 주어졌다'라고 한다.
25그러므로 너는 그들에게 말하여라. '너희가 고기를 피째로 먹으며, 우상에게 눈을 돌리고, 사람들의 피를 흘리게 하고도, 그 땅을 차지하려고 하느냐?
26너희는 칼을 의지하며, 역겨워하는 일들을 행하고, 이웃의 아내를 더럽히고 있다. 그런데도 너희가 이 땅을 차지하려고 하느냐?'
27그들에게 말하여라. '맹세코, 폐허 가운데 남아 있는 사람들이 칼에 쓰러질 것이요, 들에 나가 있는 사람들은 들짐승들에게 잡혀 먹게 할 것이며, 요새와 동굴에 있는 사람들은 전염병으로 죽게 할 것이다.
28내가 이 땅을 버려진 사막으로 만들겠으며, 이 땅이 자랑하는 힘을 사라지게 하고, 이스라엘의 산들이 황폐하게 됨으로 아무도 그 곳으로 지나다니지 않을 것이다.
29그들이 행했던 모든 역겨운 일들 때문에 내가 이 땅을 황무지로 만들 그 때에 그들이 내가 여호와인 줄 알게 될 것이다.'
30사람아, 네 백성이 담 옆이나 집 문간에 모여 너에 관해 말하기를 '가서 여호와께로부터 왔다는 말씀을 들어 보자'라고 한다.
31항상 그랬듯이, 내 백성이 네게 와서, 네 앞에 앉아 너의 말을 듣고 있으나, 그들은 들은 것을 실천하지는 않는다. 입으로는 헌신을 표현하지만, 그들의 마음은 부정한 이익들을 탐하고 있다.
32정말로, 그들에게 너는 아름다운 목소리로 사랑의 노래를 부르는 사람일 뿐이며, 악기를 잘 연주하는 사람일 뿐이다. 그것은 그들이 너의 말을 들으나, 그것들을 실천하지는 않기 때문이다.
33이 모든 것들이 반드시 실현될 것이니, 그 때에 그들은 한 예언자가 그들 가운데 있었다는 사실을 알게 될 것이다."
